NBD: Dismal AX 51P Style "Barnstormer"

Picked this up last week and used it on an event gig this weekend at a winery. I'd never heard of them before and have been looking for a 51 style and this looked unique – so I grabbed it. Brought a Mesa 15 Scout and the combo blew everyone away. Expecting the big growly lows, and got them but what was surprising were the great mids and highs.

When I got it I had plans of a Fralin split pup and an Audere 4 but so far there's no need. The pup measures just at 9 so its strong enough. This week I'll check my impressions in the studio and see if it was just the venue and my enthusiasm or is it perfect as is. I'll post a follow up.

Specs are as follows:
Model: Barnstormer Bass http://www.dismalax.com/
Body: 4 Piece Poplar Rafter
Neck: Maple
Fretboard: Honeylocust
Nut Width: 1 9/16″
Scale: 34″
Bridge: Hipshot
Tuners: Hipshot HB-1
Pickup: Razor RTBV
Electronics: CTS 250K Tone & Vol Pots
Control Knobs: Vintage Radio
Body Finish: Oil w/Flat Waterbone Varnish on Top
Neck Finish: Oil & Shellac
Weight: 8.4 lbs
From the manufacturer:
The Barnstormer series features bodies built from sections of 2×4 or 2×6 rafters, hollowed out to reduce weight, and are available in beech, oak and elm. Original saw marks are left showing, and lightly sanded to accentuate them. The finish is a flat waterborne varnish, which keeps the rough sawn look while providing a smooth and comfortable feel. All Barnstormers can also be custom ordered with plain slab or barnwood topped bodies. The necks are either one piece or laminated, and attached to the body with a full width mortise and tenon joint. The distinctive Barnstormer headstock sits a quarter inch further back than a typical inline headstock and features Hipshot or Sperzel tuners with graduated height posts, eliminating the need for string retainers.

Ran with this bass in the studio Thursday and Friday afternoon and yes the pup gave us that 51' tone plus some. All I can say is that I'm surprised since the only references I can find to Razor RTBV pups isn't too glowing - not negative, but nothing special. Growly lows, but strong mids and clean highs - more than I expected.

I've seen the BarnCasters that are reclaimed barn wood. It's a really cool concept and your bass looks like a winner!

If you want an unusual pickup to go with your special bass, check out Sentell pickups. They have a really bitchin' 51 pickup with oversized poles that has a lot more high-mids... great presence and thump.

Bonus: it was only $89 shipped.

Pick of the 51 pickup:
