Just got his yesterday and thought to share with the group. After some research, reading and disassembly it appears to be an 84 Fender Japan "P-J"..A few years back I had an 87 jazz special and it was great but something about this one is a bit more killer..and that JBS I had clearly had "jazz bass special" with a serial number on the headstock, this one does not. From reading, the P-J was the logo in 84 prior to the JBS but I will let the experts comment on that. The black neck is to die for and is super comfy. The "enlarged" pole piece p/j pickups with the TBX controls are loud as hell, and top it all off with the rare Fender F cap knobs. Not sure about the original color..it was either originally yellow and has aged to a cream-like color or maybe it was originally white and aged to a yellowish tint. Either way, sounds and feels great so far..

that headstock logo is in the japanese catalogs. PJ-555 came in snow white in japan. in us catalog it's called frost white.

Nice! And yes, Jazz Bass Specials came later from 1984. For some odd reason until around mind '86 they had the same P bass nut width like yours despite the Jazz Bass Special decal. After a transition period around '86 they came with the 1.5" Jazz nut widh neck. Probably the P necks were leftowers from these P-J basses and rebranded as the first batches of Jazz Bass Specials.

I found (as I got more into the finer aspects of set-up) the right pickup height / balance between the 2 pickups makes a big difference on these & the Jazz Bass Special.
(all basses really, but these in particular)
MY JBS had one of my all-time favorite Jazz necks.

The sucessor of this P-J in the 80s, the Jazz Bass Special was also called Boxer series. Icluded strats, telecasters and Jazz basses with matching headstock.
