NBD! EMG GZR loaded Dean for $50!

Just a few weeks ago I picked up a Peavey Grind for $40 (documented here:NBD! Peavey Grind BXP for )

Just today I went into Sam Ash to pick up nylon acoustic strings for my neighbor and saw this listed for $50:

A set of EMG GZR PJs! Despite the low price, I had the audacity to try and get it down to $40. My play with the sales guy was that if I could get this thing for $40, I might be willing to talk about a used Boss Blues Driver sitting in the display. He was hesitant and kept me waiting while he made another sale. This gave me time to cool off and rationalize spending only $50 instead of $100 just for the haggle. End of the day, I still think it's a killer deal. He also gave me the stock Dean pickups and the box the GZRs came in, which is also pretty neat!

Man, I wish I'd seen that! I have no use for it whatsoever, but that's like 110 bucks less than I've ever seen just those pickups go for (new, I have no interest in used pickups), I'm going to put that set in an upcoming project. That's an amazing deal. How does it play? I know it sounds great.

It plays great! The pickups sound great in it, too. I'm going to give it a rattle can refin in the next few months and will post pics

This is an Edge 10 P/J 35" scale (did you know realize this?) and it is active

The GZRs are terrific in the Dean. I had another set in one of the Ibanez's I own, but they weren't right for that bass. I ended up trading them for a BA II bridge. I kinda regretted that a little, so I was pretty happy to score a bass with another set of the GZRs for so cheap.

I knew something felt different about that Dean, but I wasn't aware that it was a 35"

For $50 you got a deal.
How is the neck. On most Edge models they are thin and narrow and almost always a thin satin finish on the back of the neck which I like. I own an Edge 1Q which is Passive with a 35” scale neck and a quilt maple top and 2 humbuckers.

The 35” scale is different, but not so different that is causes any problems with my playing.

That is such a deal. How does the bridge pup sound that far away from the bridge?

The neck is thinner than my Jazz, but not as thin as my Ibanez SR. It feels wide and flat - probably close to a P Bass width. It does have the satin finish on the back of the neck, which is really nice. I've got 110 DR Black Beauties on it and the action dialed in pretty low. The 110s feel pretty stiff, which makes sense with the 35" scale, but there isn't much of any fret buzz, even with the low action.

The pick up placement rules. The Jazz p'up solo'd is really throaty with a sort of burpy Stingray-ish authority. The two pickups in combination are nice, too. It's not as "scooped" sounding as my other PJ's. It's definitely a PJ flavor, just not the usual. It's a damn nice bass for $50. I've got it wired v/v/t right now (that's how I bought it) but I've got a 4 band Audere laying around that I might install in it.

No, but I have it along with the original pick ups. It's a two band, but I prefer pre-amps that have some mid node I can boost. Ideally I like a mid sweep, but I've got the same 4 band Audere in an Ibanez and a T-40, and it's worked well for both of them, so I'm hopeful my luck will continue with them.
