Yes… AVRI = America Vintage Reissue.

This is my second and I think that AVRI is underrated and Fender CS is overrated in comparison.

the custom shop 58 I bought to replace yours begs to differ

that being said I had owned 5 58s and that one had the best feeling neck. Enjoy!

I set my amp flat at a moderate volume and set the pickups for equal volume for each string. My two Am Fender P/Js' P pickups are pretty flat, on one the G is slightly higher and on the other one the E is slightly lower than the rest. I play around on the neck for a little bit to make sure that none of the open notes are louder or softer in my room that the others.

I love the pickup in my 58 warts and all. It's just such a good sound. Yes a little imbalanced but not glaringly so. My AO50s had the same thing and I did replace that with a Fralinamajig for variety sake but it is a great sounding pickup and a special bass. Enjoy your new friend.

I /played this bass at a private party last night, and definitely heard that the D and G strings had less volume in the mix than E & A. So, I adjusted the pickups until they sounded more balanced to my ears… This is where things ended up.

I should add that the '58 pickups really do sound fantastic.

So, I'm trolling the Spitfire Vintage Tort website and thinking about swapping out the anodized gold pick guard for some black 'n tort. I'm trying to decide on dark red tort or brighter red tort… what say you P heads?

Personal taste but I think the lighter red looks good on black.

After reading through this thread, I'm leaning toward not changing. Anodized Gold is pretty classic.

Yeah, personally, I'm staying gold. Tort to me goes with a rosewood board. White, black, or gold with a maple neck but for the 58 vibe I just have to stay gold. Gigged mine over the weekend and it's a great bass.

I agree… did my first roots/funk band rehearsal tonight and the '58 AVRI sounded killer.
