NBD Fender 2011 American Special Precision

Hi all,

First post here.

Acquired a 2011 American Special P Bass yesterday here in Melbourne at our local used musical emporium. Was A$1400 which translates to around US$1000. The neck is so nice just like my MIM roadworn Jazz. There are limited reviews about these P Basses, and but the ones I found are very accurate. Love the neck compared to my old MIJ baseball bat P, and the output is clear and loud. No reason to replace the stock pickups.

Weighs exactly 4 kg.

A few dints on the back of the neck but didn't notice in the shop and which you can't feel when playing, but for the price here (in Australia) I was looking at a MIM Player series which would have cost the same with a gig bag (this one included a moulded Fender case). So happy days!

Be interested in comments from others about these.

My comment is that is one heck of a bass for what you paid. Sweet Deal! Congrats!

Congrats and yes you did good. AmSp's are really nice. Mine is one of my favorites. I know some people aren't fans of the grease bucket tone circuit but I find it very useful. Probably the only P I have that I don't run dimed all the time and actually use the tone. Enjoy it, that's a beauty.

Congrats! I've owned countless American Standards, but found "my thing" with the Specials. The "shallow C" neck profile is the most comfortable for me (standard P-bass width at the nut. Less rounded profile in the back). I changed the bridge to a hi-mass one, not that it made a difference. Just a preference I have. I got a 2nd one to keep tuned down a half-step. The consistency with these basses in terms of weight, feel, everything, is amazing. Black pickguard one is a 2011, the white pickguard is a 2012. I've owned 53 basses in my lifetime. These have eliminated my days of GAS. I'm not even curious to try other basses anymore. In terms of the extras the Standards have (lightweight tuners, string through body, graphite neck support rods), I don't feel I'm missing anything important.

Nice bass. I have a 2011 as well. I much prefer the neck on these than the standard P. I had thought about mods but left everything standard. The stock pickup is nice. The only change I might have made was to put ultralight tuners for better balance. It's my number 2 bass now so I'll leave it as is.
Btw, red/maple looks great. Mines in sunburst, but I like the look of yours better.

Thanks for the comments everyone. It's a great sounding instrument. Neck is very comfortable and the range of tones are more than I was expecting. You can get a really funky raspy sound by digging in or the usual nice P Bass tone by backing off a bit, and winding the tone back a little. The greasebucket thing seems to work well. This one is a keeper. Not looking for anything else now. This will do.
