NBD - Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass

Wow, that soundclip sounds amazing! Gritty and growly as balls.

I'd be interested to hear how a blacktop would compare to a modern player, soundwise.

Thanks! Not sure how they would compare. The only modern player I've tried is the Telecaster Bass, which is about the complete opposite of a Jazz Bass. Do the MIM Blacktops use the same pickups as the MIC Modern Players? It would be interesting to find out.

Holy crap that sounded awesome!! And that sustain…zowie!

I've been thinking of looking one up to give it a whirl, but they're a bit "thin on the ground" in my area. I'm a big fan of P/J configs, but I've been curious how a P/P config would sound. Thanks for the sample.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of strings are you rockin' in that clip?

Just an update - I ended up returning the bass. It had a warped pick guard, which I would have lived with in a used bass but not a brand new one. I also found it's a bit of a one trick pony, at least for me. It's superb at the grindy thing but wasn't really happening on the softer stuff. It could have been operator error. Fender is targeting the hard rock people with the bass anyway.

That said, if I see a used one on Craigslist or something I will probably buy it again, but at a used price. Considering the retail cost that should be pretty cheap ;)

Good luck!

I kinda thought that might be the case. Maybe flats would help? I already have grindy with my jazz bass. I was hoping these would be more punchy than grindy.
