It in fact does look like the same body to me, it looks like they sent you a Highway One with the satin nitrocellulose finish BONUS!!! Why someone would swap out that guard is beyond me, have you run the serial yet?

Same body. I saved and blew up both images. The woodgrain matches up. I'll bet this wasn't GC that changed out the guard. Someone bought it, changed the guard and returned it. GC employees probably didn't check the photo and just put it back in inventory. No worries for you... they gave you a credit and it looks great!
If the serial comes back as NOT a Highway One I would suspect a neck swap onto a Highway one at sometime occurred, the other scenario is it was refinished in nitro (and done very well) in either case I WOULD ABSOLUTELY KEEP IT! Nice Score

looks exactly like my 2000 MIM J. it came with the white pg, it's a solid well made player.. quickly switched to tort. but now it wears a single ply black pg........Great looking bass you got there. If it sounds and plays good..you know the drill

So it looks like it was either a neck swap onto a Highway One body or someone did a really nice job with nitro or matte/satin clear coat over the poly, could be a very good "knockdown" on the original glossy finish. I am not aware of any MIM brown burst that had a stock satin finish on the body, either way it's a great lookin bass!
That tort pickguard looks like a cheap aftermarket - the shape is weird. The black one looks much better.
Keep the black one! That bass is a looker! I'm not normally a huge fan of torn on sunburst although some basses are exceptions. If they paid you the difference you can have both and its a mega score!

Because I’m so fascinated by this thing, I took the pickguard off. Looks like the previous owner had to drill some new holes to make the new pickguard work..
