After months of scouring listings and constantly refreshing the used section of the GC website, I finally found a Mustang PJ in my budget. This is a Sonic Blue 2017. To my delight, it came with some chromes already on there. Speaking of which, this thing sounds so nice with flats on it. Unfortunately, it's not the vibe I'm going for with my current band, so I swapped it with the rounds on my bronco.
This "blue" is extremely subtle. I didn't really have a color preference so I'm cool with it, but I'd be upset if I was actually expecting a blue color. Here's my Mark Hoppus bass in Olympic white to compare.
Something I'm not too crazy about is this pickup. I thought it might need some replacement foam, but upon further inspection, it actually looks like it was drilled in on a angle from the factory.
Oh well. The p pickup sounds nice regardless. Speaking of pickups, it is pretty much as noisy as advertised, especially under the lighting of my basement. I really enjoy the solod P and PJ together but the J on its own is weak.
The fretboard seemed super dry so I applied some F One oil to it but even two passes of that didn't seem to do much. It's my first experience with Pao Ferro. Is that how they are?
Some other thoughts so far:
This would definitely be a killer thump machine with the flats on it.
Neck dive is pretty bad. Didn't think it would be an issue but not sure if I can live with it.
The notes higher up the neck seem to choke out a bit and just sound a little sloppy and the action is already pretty high as it is.
I never knew how much I liked contour bodies until I played this slab body.
I know it's lighter and smaller than my jazz bass, but this neck dive makes it seem heavier than it is. I bought this to save my back but not sure it's doing any good.
This might be blasphemy, but I kinda think my bronco plays better overall.
Overall, I'm a little let down. I thought this would be my perfect bass, but not sure if I will keep it or not. I got such a good deal on it though so I might flip it later on (GC sold it as just "good" condition but literally wiped it down with a microfiber and that took all the dirt off right away).
