I saw a 1994 mim p bass on CL..the Guy was asking 300 and said there's a chip in the pickguard and the plastic volume knob was stripped but the pot still works..300 is a bit steep...

I offered an item from trade but he wanted cash. I told him I could maybe do 150$ Max and he went for it. I'm meeting him in about an hour.

It looked to be in good shape for its age. How are Tue early-mid 90s Mexican basses

This is a sunburst with black PG and a rosewood board ..

ok so i got the bass. its got a nick on the top and the pickguard was shaved down near the pickup and it needs a small truss adjustment...no big deal..it is almost 20 years old after all..

Also I am going to rewire it tonight. i havent plugged it in yet the one of the pots is screwed, I have new pots and all the wire and solder already so it was never a concern..hey i even enjoy messing with basses

all in all it looks like it will be a fine bass for $150 and it gives me something to do for a couple hours. :cool:

Actually Im going to check out Terrapin Guitars. The guy has made me custom ones in the past, might as well go there for this too. he does great work by the way..

EDIT: ehh im going to leave it black for now. the guitar player in my band plays a sunburst with a tort guard and black pickups...i cant have the SAME color scheme...

Oh heres a mini review.

I will compare it to my 1999 squier P special.

First, it is a very light bass. Compared to my squier it has to be a couple pounds lighter. But then again, my Squier must be a heavy bass because it feels heavy compared to any bass.

Second. When I play it unplugged it is much much louder than my Squier.

It sounds ok when plugged in. It has the old fender ceramic pickups in it...yuck. It is a lot brighter than my squier in the same amp and same settings. I have to roll off of the tone to 6 - 8 to get the same type of tone as the squier. im not sure if its the pickup difference or just the bass but I will eventually swap the pickup for something else. the bass also has lighter strings on it than i like so those will get changed to a .045-.105 set

My Squier had a ceramic pickup too and I changed it out for a Wilde P46 and it made all the difference. The squier has a nice warm thump which i love. Ive let many local basss players try it out and they all say the same thing..the squier has enough thump to crush a building!

Overall its a good score for 150. its gig worthy as it sits now with minimal work done to it. any idea on what this thing is worth in case i decide to sell or trade it?

Does anyone have any pickup suggestions? This bass will be run through a 72 ampeg v4b. i like the low mid ampeg tone. I play blues, rock, and jam band stuff. (hendrix, grateful dead, etc...)

Congrats on the score - that looks like money to me...

Regarding pups: if you want a modern type of sound, I'd go with either S-D QPers, or DiMarzio Model Ps and a .05 cap - old school sound, I'd either go S-D SPB-1s, or Fender's '62 pups - and a .1 cap, 250k pots either way, and a Switchcraft jack...

Git 'er done, and go out and make some money with that bad boy!!!
