This is a great time of year to buy! That's a beautiful instrument...

I also understand the appeal of wanting a birth year instrument. I've played a few 1969's, but I haven't touched one that felt good enough to play... good luck on your quest!

I've never had a the pleasure of standing in front of an SVT with an 8 x 10 behind me, but I can only imagine.

Wouldn't the whole "mid-scoop" thing make more sense for those who primarily slap? I would assume that is not the majority of people who by P's. FWIW, the stock pickup really didn't sound that bad to me, but then again I'm not a regulary gigging bassits either.

That is really sad. I played my P (identical to the one you just bought) through it and it is the very best bass sound there is. Not every one will agree, but if you watch concerts on TV at all, most of what you will see is an SVT and either a P or a J. I have both, but prefer the P. Sadly the SVT and the V4B which followed it are both long gone.
I used no EQ at all. All the tone dials were set at 0 (they have a - / + configuration so 0 is straight up) and the pots on the P full open. Just good old natural P bass sound.
Enjoy that bass.

I used to love to stand right in front of it when I was playing something I needed to dig into. Waitin' For the Bus comes to mind. I could feel my pants legs fluttering. Seriously.
If I could still carry that monster around, I'd get another, but since I'm not playing full time any more, I can't justify the cost. I'm using a Rumble 500 V3 which is really good, but nothing (IMHO) is a good a P -> SVT/

I've never owned an SVT + 8x10 but played some backlined. The feeling is the similar to a high performance car where you know you have so much more behind you than you'll ever need and everything feels just so solid. I does inject a level of confidence to your playing.

Not only slap, but that mid scoop makes basses sound "prettier" in the store and in the bedroom. Honestly, I thought it sounded good until I got it to a gig and promptly disappeared in the mix, which never happens.

Well that's really funny, because on a p bass I think rosewood looks better, and though there is very little sound difference, I think rosewood tonally suits a p bass. But in comparison maple is so easy to look after and keep clean.

(Edited because I forgot) I think part of the reason I love this bass so much is that I've never seen a sunburst bass with a maple board. It looks killer!

I got this for $895 from Chicago Music Exchange.
It is abosolutely mint, no dings, scratches etc. (God bless poly.........ha ha ha).
I'd love to get a birth year instrument (1969) with this same color combo someday.

It plays beautifully and the build quality is top-notch.

As JimmyM pointed out in a separate thread the 2008 - 2011 stock Fender pickups provide perfect "bedroom tone".........ha ha ha.
That said, I'm going to replace it with a stock Fralin pickup.
Also, I'm replacing the rounds with Nickel Lo-Riders.

In honor of M.R. Ogle I'm naming this bass "tort-loaf" :)

That's a nice score, brotherman.

I wouldn't be so quick to replace that pickup.

I'm extremely skeptical of the group-think or herd mentality on TB concerning this era.
