NBD - Fender Player II Precision - Sunburst / Rosewood

I’ve seen some of the “vintage” models that look like the fret dots are stained brown, so I’m inclined to believe it. If it’s not model specific, it comes down to whether they do it before or after the dot markers are installed.
I've been told ebony boards these days are usually stained, cause you cannot get the dark ebony. I don't know about rosewood.

I picked up a new bass because I wanted something a bit cheaper that played well and I could gig with and not be overly worried about. After letting my new bass adjust to the temperature inside the house, I tuned it up today. First impressions…well, it’s not ready to play! The fretboard is rough, it feels like sandpaper. It’s extremely dry, which given the time of year, ok, but don’t they oil them at the factory? The fret edges are sharp (online reviews said they were pretty good). The action…OMG, it’s about 7/16” - 1/2” off of the fretboard at the 12th fret! Never have I picked up an instrument that was so unplayable right out of the box. It’s going to need a lot of work to get it into playing shape! I didn’t even bother checking the intonation since it’s going to need a full workover.

Would you keep it, or send it back? Sending it back is such a pain, especially for a bass that didn’t come with a case!

I planned to upgrade it heavily…halfwounds, himass bridge, hipshots, strap locks, and quarter pounders. I’m wondering if it’s a lost cause, at this point. This is my first Fender product that didn’t live up to expectations, and I’ve played a lot over the last 25 years. I’m really kind of bummed…
If it’s not playable I’d send it back.

Whether or not it’s stained, I’m going to take a greenie pad to it while I’m setting it up and before I oil it. I do it standard on all my rosewood fretboards. I guess I’ll see by how much crud comes off!

The fret ends aren’t sprouted, more that they just need a good filing to match the rounded ftreboard edges.

Overall, I think I can salvage it after a few truss rod adjustments. I’m just annoyed that I’m going to have to put a good amount of time in over the holidays to get it there.
