NBD for my 2yo son (Tiny Boy)

As a dad, I have to gush about this.

My son’s been playing his toy guitar and bass so much that even for a 2 1/2 year old his hand position and sense of rhythm is pretty good (says all dads). We decided to get him the Tiny Boy bass that Gregor from BassTheWorld reviewed twice because it was the smallest, and best quality bass for the size (and it’s a Japanese bass so it worked out for us). I found this one used for 43,000yen ($300USD) in mint condition.

I covered his face, but he had a big smile and was quite ecstatic! So far he can fake finger style but does slap fairly well. He still doesn’t play actual notes though, lol. He even learned all the anatomical parts of a guitar in English.

As far as my impressions of the bass, it has a solid sound and the cost/performance is quite good. Like, I’m actually considering using it for one of my live gigs with my band next month. The neck is a bit on the thicker side but maybe normal for some of you (it’s still comfortable). There is a bit of a gap between the neck and the slot that it goes into. The tuners are too easy to move so you have to be careful with that. Also, it’s s but uncomfortable to play sitting down because of the short horn on the right side. Otherwise, the construction is quite good!

It’s 31 inches（790mm）in total length and 5.3lb (2.4kg) in weight. It’s a fun bass with a solid, clear sound.

Love it! I picked up a 24” History Jazz bass for the kids, but it’s so good I use it for travel and camping (with a battery powered amp).

Gotta raise the next generation of bass players!

Nice. A while back I picked up a new bass in that was both in commemoration of my fortieth birthday and in honor of my baby daughter, with the color having personal meaning to the family. Now we'll just have to wait and see if she ever decides she wants to play lefty 34" headless five-string bass with a High C.

Nice! My son started playing an Ibanez Mikro at that same age. He's 18 and graduated HS now, and considers himself primarily a drummer, but he's a fantastic bass player. His touch and sound have been a decade ahead of his age since he started.

They’re not as short or light as the acoustic Ubass, if that’s what you’re talking about. Compared to their electric, the Tiny Boy is a bit shorter.

That’s awesome! I have a friend like that, except he started off on drums, then was into prog rock on guitar, and now he’s a professional bassist.

My son (recently turned 3) took his first steps towards a guitar and he loves to "assist" me whenever I do setups. However, he forbids that I play. Whenever I grab a bass or guitar he mutes the strings and tells me to put it back. Make of that what you will.
What is worse he seems to develop an interest in drums. He loves beating all kinds of things to see what sounds they make, and so we got him a toy drum thingy (not like an actual set) and he goes freaking crazy on that thing. I guess I'll have to fire him soon *sigh*

No way man I say encourage their musical interests whatever that looks like, I can say
is I absolutely dig the fact that my kiddo had taken to my drum kit at a very early age, I had been playing both drums and bass when he was young and I think drums were a better fit and really more naturally interesting with so many different things to “hit” and make “sounds” with, he took to it like fish in water and I have had a “house” drummer to play bass with until he move out. He’s a semi-pro now and plays in two serious bands and gets calls for session work locally and regularly.

He still occasionally thanks me for giving him the “gift of music” I understand completely
as my pops did the same for me, I just wish I would have told him when he was still with us.

A little update. We got him the Blackstar Fly3 mini amp w/ the extension cab.
You know, considering the price, size, and weight, it’s a great deal on an awesome mini amp! You can get a decent amount of bass sound and there’s clarity in each note. We got it mainly so there’s sound for when he plays so he doesn’t have to go all the way to my office to use my amp. Also, I got tired of him poking his finger through my cabinet’s grill and denting the center speaker (quite annoying but that’s a 2yo for ya).
