NBD: G&L Custom Shop L-1000

To celebrate my 50th b’day I ordered a new bass to replace my beloved 1985 L-1000. Greg at @RocketMusic helped me spec the bass, a swamp ash body with a rear cavity, maple neck with ebony board, black hardware and the pointy headstock.

Ordered in March and got it this week… and it’s just what I wanted. Actually, the neck is better: a slimmer profile and smoother satin finish and, of course, the 6 bolt neck. The body is as expected, medium weight, well balanced and familiar controls.

I asked for lyrics from a song by my dearest friend Claudio, who was the guitar player in my 90s band, to be etched in the back of the headstock. He passed away in December, a few months before he turned 50. He’ll always be close.

Hopefully, I will be spinning this baby live by the end of the month!

Looks great. Congrats! What do the knobs and switch do exactly?

Knobs are volume, treble, bass (passive, cut only). The switch is parallel, series and OMG (treble cut, it sounds bassier)

New Bass Day for me, too! 2023 Fender MIJ Traditional '60s Precision. Well... I got it Wednesday, but Thursday it got a new pickguard and Pure Vintage '70s bridge, and today it got new strings, proper setup, oversized strap pins, and then matches up with one of the most comfortable straps ever. Strap and strap pins from: Well-Hung Guitar Accessories | Reverb Canada

Aaaaaaaand it's all green! Lol

Plays great, looks great, feels great. This likely will be my new No.1!!!

Yes, the ‘23 is overall smaller, although I feel it is a bit deeper too. Will have to take some measurements. However, the ‘85 is lighter.

What is the reason of the change in shape? Does the newer one have better ergonomics or so? Think I prefer the shape of the blue one. It looks more like a Musicman Sterling.
