Many years ago my (then) girlfriend bought me my first 5-string. At the time, I was playing a G&L L2000. I really loved that bass but found I was playing the fiver almost exclusively. Well, the gf became my wife and during the early years of our marriage things were a little tougher than they are now. I ended up selling the G&L. Fast forward almost 30 years and we're doing much better financially. I found this L2500 tribute on Reverb a month or two ago and kept coming back to it. I love the "blueburst" finish and the versatility of the G&L sound. Showed it to the wife and she said; "Get it! I remember how much you loved your old G&L". So I ordered it Saturday night and it arrived today. (Thursday...if my times and days seem a little screwy, it's because I work nights.) Anyway, here's the result!
Bass arrived on a day when the high was only in the teens and thanks to FedEx, it sat on my porch for 5 hours. They were supposed to get a signature and I left instructions both on the FedEx app and taped to the door. Thankfully, I live in a decent neighborhood. Brought it in and let it warm up for about 4 hours, then took the inner box out and let it sit another hour. Overly cautious? Yeah, probably.
Finally unwrapped the inner box and saw this. I would call it an "adequate" packing job. Personally, I would have liked more but you get what yah get. Basically a few pieces of styrofoam and a single layer of bubble stuff front and back and around the edges. There was also bubble wrap in the outer box to keep the inner one from shifting.
...and here's what I got!
Seller described it as "B" stock due to a slight scratching between the neck pickup and the upper horn. They said it was difficult to photograph and I agree. I had to get the light just right to see it: (just under the reflection from my ceiling light)
From straight on it's basically invisible:
So far, so good...right? Ah, but here's the rub:
Looks like maybe it got dropped flat on it's back and the pickup ended up deep in the rout. Looks like an easy fix and I'd really rather not send it back for this. The nut looks a little rough too but the strings are seated well and the height looks good. Played it a little before I had to leave for work and it feels great. There was some buzzing but as I looked down the neck I saw NO relief. If anything, there was a slight back-bow. I'll let it acclimate for 24 hours and reevaluate. The strings it came with are a little too jngly for me, but I do have a set of my favorite strings lying around so a set-up with them is next. Overall I'm pleased with the bass and the company I dealt with via Reverb. Not so happy with FedEx. Weekend coming so I'll have some time to enjoy bonding with the new bass. Guess I'd better swing over to the G&L club and get a #.
