I did a similar build as the original poster using a Guitar fetish pawlonia P bass body in cherry sunburst. Mine was built using a Mighty Mite jazz neck w maple fretboard. I used left over parts from an older MIM P bass for the rest of the build: pickups, bridge, tuners, electronics and pickguard. The completed bass weighs in at 6.3 pounds!
Parts cost me $72.00 body shipped, and $80.00 neck shipped (coupon and sale). The guitar looks, sounds great and is really easy on the back. Slightly brighter sound than my ash Fender P, but very resonant. I had to enlarge the neck pocket being very careful with semi soft wood: the body is setup for a 2-7/16" heel width while a standard Fender neck is 2-1/2". I also had to position, drill and mount the bridge and drill out the bridge ground hole to the control cavity. These are things that anyone with a little mechanical capability can handle. Im very pleased I took the plunge.
