NBD Glarry 30" Short Scale Bass - Definite Modding Platform

I got this Glarry 30" Bronco-ish bass for $86 brand new off the Fleabay. I had to check it out, so with that little $$, I figured I'd go for it.
Looks to be modeled after a Squier Bronco, but that's about it. Very lightweight, in the Glarry tradition. Fun to play, but that big Sterling-type bridge spaces the strings out a bit beyond the pickups effective zone; A and D strings ring out good, but the G is a bit weak and the E is real quiet. Possibly the cheap strings, as my son had a Glarry P-style Bass and swapping the strings made a huge improvement. If it had a bridge with Bronco string spacing, that may make all the difference.
I can see someone grafting a MM-style humbucker in there, or a dual coil Jazz pickup. A '51 Single coil would probably go right in there, too.
Welp, I'm very tempted to make a fiver outta this one...... might as well for kicks-n-giggles. The neck pocket is 2-1/2", like a full sized Fender. That's at least 1/4" wider than a Bronco. If I do, I'll report back.
Kinda surprised that I haven't seen other NBD's on this model.
Anyway, just thought I'd share. Sure looks like it could be a real nice modding platform for little Cheddah.

Yep, that light, lol. Must be due to the slightly smaller body size and shorter neck. I think it is really a great modding platform. I very well may sell all my other basses and buy about 20 of these for my "Mad Scientist" Builds...........or not, lol. NECK DIVE??? Who cares??

Yep, I'm tempted to buy a Glarry Jazz and put a nice Made-In-China Squier neck on it, modded for a fiver. I like the 1-5/8" width nut and the 9.5" radius and this one came with the small tuners. I already have 4R1L Hipshot Lic tuners for it, to change out. I'm thinking of just putting some SX 5 string pickups in it and running an Audere preamp. I love what that preamp can do to cheapo pickups!!
OK, now I've already started 2 builds in my mind.............now I need to come through for the TB community, lol.

I have one as well. NBD: Glarry content

Mine had a problem with the pickup placement in the pickguard. A, D and G strings are fine, but E string is too far out of the pickup range and has about half the volume. Will definitely want to see what you end up doing with yours.

At this point, I am thinking I may chuck the bridge, fill all the holes for the bridge and pickguard, then replace the bridge with something different. Not sure what, yet. As for the pickguard, I am going to cut my own from a blank sheet of pickguard material.

I was thinking of either a big blade pickup or a MM style. Also going to trim the pick guard and give it more of an early Musicmaster bass look. BTDT with Bronco pg's. Also paint body and headstock Oly White or something close.

those are cool axes (they look pretty cool next to the rest of the glarry lineup). i thought @JC BASS 91 had fashioned that look when i first saw his, but they come that way --- nice! i think all of the glarrys are great for modding and yours should be a lot of fun, @covermego --- congratulations on your new instrument!

Seems like the neck is pretty stout. A bit rough, but that's ok. I can fix that, once the extra tuner and new nut are installed. I have a Mm style 5 string bridge, so good to go there. Awaiting a profound revelation on the pickup.
Speaking of "a bit rough", I bought one of those Glarry mini basses. Not sure of other's experience, but mine looked, played and felt like a Jr. High project. Sent 'er back.
