I am first and foremost a guitar player that want to get more serious with the bass.
Having a 5 stringer to play around, I was on the hunt for a good 4 stringer and decided the PJ configuration was what I wanted.
My preference are a natural ash or alder body as I am not a fan of solid color for instruments and the narrower jazz style neck. My first choice is always a rosewood finger board as I never played anything else...
After looking at Fenders, Squire, G&L, Sire and other brands, my attention was caught by Godin.
I know Godin since a while as a guitar brand, but never really was busy with their bass offer...
After watching bassist virtuoso Jean Bertrand Carbou showing the qualities of the Godin Passion RG4 on the official Youtube video and the other video on Facebook where they jam at the Godin showroom , I was immediately sold on it.
I was first disappointed trying to buy a rosewood finger board Passion RG-4 and being told they were discontinued furthermore the ETA for a new maple fretboard one was pushed to JUNE I was so bummed.
I even reached to 3 other shops that were not aware the rosewood finger board was discontinued and were still accepting order and got the confirmation from Godin too...
Actually I got to know the real story by Godin Customer Service :
The Passion RG4 is discontinued (not just the rosewood) but apparently they still have some parts left to produce a couple (maple finger board only) and ETA is 6 to 8 weeks.
They probably don't sell enough to justify keeping it on inventory and that is sad.
That was supposed to be my 50th anniversary gift this month and the thought having to wait another 2 or 3 months for one was depressing (patience is not one of my virtue).
2 stores close to Montreal had still one maple version each in inventory, but I ended up buying on Reverb from a private seller a mint one for a very fair price.
Originally those were apparently 3400 can$ don't know if they ever sold at that price since they are 1795 can$ since a while as far as I know.
In any case for a 2 months old instrument I could get an even better deal and just got it yesterday at noon.
My first impression: gorgeous finish, light (8.2 pounds) a little bit neck heavy but not affecting my play at all. Flawless quality assembling; definitely Custom Shop quality.
The tone? one word WOW. The PJ Quarter Pound config really shine.
I love the neck / series / parallel / Bridge 4 position switch making it a very versatile instrument.
Articulated, responsive with lot of punch and growl as I want.
It can do the burpy Jaco style tone with the bridge pup to the assertive P bass punch à la King Crimson Wetton I am so digging.
The maple finger board gives it also a snappy attack that can suit my Rick itch too.
I am super happy with my acquisition, its just a pity they will stop producing them!
