NBD - Guild

Got this Guild Starfire II delivered yesterday. Still feeling my way around it looking for the tones I like best. Lots of possibilities with Volume/Volume/Tone/Tone/Master Volume and 3-way switch.

I'm gonna' slap a set of D'Addario Black Nylon Tapewounds on it when I get a chance. The stock rounds sound pretty good on it, but I'm more of a flats guy.

Ha ha! Unfortunately, it wouldn't do you any good. I sold it awhile back in order to make room for this one: Warwick (Made in Germany) Star Bass II. I liked the Guild, but this Warwick seems to be the answer to my elusive quest for a semi-hollow. No offense to all you Guild lovers (of which I am still one). I still have my Guild 6-string acoustic guitar.

So glad to have found this thread -- and thanks to those who answered my previous question. One more, if I could: I had settled on the La Bella 760FL for my new Starfire (thanks to several comments here), but I can't find them in medium scale. So looks like my choice now, if I need medium scale, is either 760FS (standard rather than light gauge), or the LTFs. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Nice bass. I have a 2017 in red. The stock rounds were not so great for it of course.

I tried the La Bella LTF medium scale and Pyramid gold flat short scale. The latter just barely fits. Intonation was a little problem. I would have to notch the D and G saddles to get them back quite enough as the post gets in the way.

La Bella LTF sounds very nice right out of the box, that warm smooth plunky sound somewhat like a double bass. Pyramids took a little break in to get rid of the excess twang on the G string. They have a bit more “hair” on the tone vs the LTF, but very warm and smooth. Especially with the Pyramids you can hear a lot of those old Phil Lesh and Jack Casady tones. The hollow body gives it a throaty sound even with some overdrive.

I like the neck pickup on full a lot, lots of dynamics, and set up the bridge pickup with tone well rolled off to get a more mellow sound just by switching the pickup selector. It’s a bit too many options but I’d recommend getting the two pickup version because the neck pickup sounds great.
