NBD & Holy Crap OLP!

I picked up an OLP Stingray copy that had been sitting in a friend's closet for a while. It didn't have any strings on it and quite honestly I wasn't expecting much. I picked up a set of super slinkys at the shop, which is quite out of character for me as I'm a Daddario man, but they were on sale and I figured "eh, when in Rome." So I got home, threw on the slinkys, stretched em out a bit to let them settle in and holy smokes, this is the tone I've been looking for. I put it through my BDDI to give it a nice overdrive and started jamming along to some songs and it was nice and punchy, still a bit bright for my taste but I figure it'll die down as the strings really start to wear in. I had plans on modding this thing with a different pickup and a preamp, but I'm really considering leaving it bone stock as it is. I think with a slight bump to the truss rod, raise the action a bit and throw on a black pickguard and this beauty will become my main player.

I'm not sure if it's the strings, the bass itself, or maybe I'm hallucinating but I think if I change it too much I just won't like it as much.

I picked up an OLP MM3 about a month ago - I was very impressed with tone and playability. Great basses for sure. Happy NBD!!

I too picked up an OLP a few weeks ago... black body with maple neck (beautiful flatsawn with minimal runout). I just saw it hanging at my local Music Go Round and decided to take it for a spin. Needless to say that although I didn't need to add another bass to my stable, the $89 price tag was more than I could resist. I figured that it was just going to be a backup to my ATK700 but it seems to be showing up to more and more band practices... not too surprising since I am a passive man at heart.

I've been a fan of the StingRay since before EB bought the rights to the name but being a part-time musician I was never in the position to justify such an expensive bass. I happened upon the ATK which I dearly love but this OLP MM2 is such a wonderful alternative to the on-board preamp ATK and it fits so well in the mix with my band that it's become my #2.

The OLPs really are a great find for 1/5 of the price of a Fleabass.
