So after my most recent Squier PJ purchase I felt like I was done buying basses for a while......

WELLLLL just yesterday I was flipping through CL and saw this beautiful Samick Custom 5 string and knew I had to buy it. The owner listed it for $250 but I snagged it up for $230 cash, not too big of a discount but still something.

Bass has an
Alder body
Wenge/Bubinga 5 pc neck
Rosewood fretboard
And even a brass nut.

This is my first Wenge neck and I LOVE it. I'm a Warwick fan so Wenge is always a good thing. It has a very modern tone and the only thing I can compare it too is my Warwick Corvette. Enough talk, here are some pics with closeups of the neck :)

So after spending a bit more time with this, and after a good setup, this bass is blowing my away. I had to sand the neck because I didn't like the finish and the grain was raised and after that it plays so much better. Apparently these were made in the same Korean factory that makes ibanez basses, does anybody know if that's true? It does look and feel like an ibanez, and the head stock is basically an exact copy

It was the previous owner who told me so I guess I'm taking it with a grain it salt. Everything looks really similar to an ibanez bass so its a little believable.

Yes, Samick built 505 basses in the plant where this critter came from. Do not be surprised if the pickups are actually Kent Armstrongs.

By the way that bass is probably 18-20 years old!

Decent preamp, but I'm looking for something with a little more headroom...but I don't want to hose the tone...this cheap little bass is often my go-to, because the neck blows away every thing else I've used except for my Steinberger and an old Ric 4001, and it just sounds so damn good!

This bass has had some surgery since this post. The stock pickups were weak on a couple strings and would randomly cut out, so I gutted them and threw a set of Warwick MEC gold jazz pickups in like so

The bridge pickup is as close to a Warwick Thumb position as I could get. I used the pickup covers from the gutted pickups so it looks completely stock. I also took out the preamp for a V/B/T with a series/parallel tone pot. It doesn't get played too much since I got my 5 string Corvette but I have more mods lined up and it will get used more, it's a nice little addition to the stable
