NBD- I think this is a good deal?

So I was browsing the local GC not intending to buy anything but strings. I came upon this Squier P/J. Immediatley I noticed that these are not stock pickups, actually I am not sure what brand they but they look like MM Cutlass pickups. Anyway, its neck is thinner than my other P but damn I am mpressed with this. It sounds huge, feels great and it light. There are so many models and versions of these basses so I am not even sure what exactly this is..I did find an article that maybe its a Squier Standard by the headstock(Duh)? Anyway, it was $190 so I just bought it..

If you ever decided to swap pickups, you could offset the cost of purchasing that bass considerably by selling the pickups. No need to if they sound good though, excellent score! I came across a set of Fender Noiseless Jazz Gen 4 via a similar method. Squier bass on Guitar Center used was loaded with them, bought the bass and then flipped it later with some Artecs in it.

I have what looks like the same bass. Unfortunately, mine is all stock and is in the project queue to be hot rodded.

Are the pots full size? Maybe they swapped the pickups and the harness? And I think I read this particular model has a Jazz Bass neck although it says P bass.

Not sure about the pots but the neck makes sense for sure, its slimmer. The pickups are not stock and not sure if they are an upgrade?

Looks like a Standard Series P Bass Special in Antique Burst. You're right about the neck - it is Jazz-width.
The bridge isn't stock. The pickups could be something like these Artec Big Poles: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284967287573

Thanks to all who have contributed over the years to the threads. I have a very nice history of the Squier Standard P Bass Special and it's emergence to the VM line. Glad to part of the family now.

Seems to be the week for picking up Squier Standard P Bass Specials! Picked up this 2002 for a C Major!

Could be Sentell pickups but their jazz pickup has eight smaller magnet lugs instead of four larger ones.

Have you opened it up to look at the pickups more closely?

Just tell people you bought a set of Delano pickups and they came with a body, neck and hardware !

No not yet just got it 2 days ago and still playing and experimenting..

I would have had that thing open right when I got home, LOL. Please report back when you investigate under the pickguard.

At the price you paid the pups are probably Delano clones from Artec or a similar Asian brand. You could be getting lucky though.

I think you may be right about them being a clone because I looked up all of the Delano pj sets and they all have the logo in white..

The Squier Standard line weren't horrible instruments by any means, and you've got a P/J in a cool color, all for under $200. Win in my book.

The pups and bridge aren't original, but if it sounds good and stays in tune, you've got a player.

They are an upgrade. Mine was stock and has the typical Squier PU's. Thin wires, dime sized pots. They work but don't sound great. I am gutting to put in a Fender Original '63 P bass P/U, a '75 reissue J bass neck, and bought a J bass harness with jack. I don't like side jacks and will need to cover the hole, but also need to carve out some more under the P/U for the extra pot.......that project is on hold for now, though......
