NBD! Ibanez AEB105E - Worthy 5 String Acoustic!

After making the leap from 4 strings to 5 earlier this pandemic, I've been craving an acoustic 5 string to practice with. As you may know, the market for 5 string acoustic basses is pretty slim... most of the instruments out there are $1k+, which is waay more then I wanted to spend on a practice guitar that would probably get abused. Enter the Ibanez AEB105E...

I had my eye on this Sweetwater deal for months, but I couldn't pull the trigger because I thought it was super overpriced ($400). I own an old (20 years?) 4 string Ibanez AEB. It's definitely not something I would pay a few hundred for... So I contacted Ibanez and spoke with a sales rep.. He soothed my fear of repeating the same issues as before. I dropped the coin for a new one from Sweetwater! You may notice the photos are professionally done; that is because Sweetwater used my actual instrument to update their store listing (which was previously lacking any useful photos). Non-valuable brag, I own the website's showroom model... :roflmao:

The B String
Surprisingly full in volume. After reading so many bad things about 5 string acoustic ABGs, I was half expecting the B string to be inaudible. However, even with the bronze acoustic strings the B is pronounced and full. The tone is not as focused as I wish, but it's definitely good enough for the cost.

The Quality
Surprisingly high quality and built well. The set-up on it is decent. A luthier or repair shop could probably file/level the frets and lower the action, but out of the box it's not bad. I'm stoked that the truss rod actually works! This was a big hesitation from my 4 string Ibanez AEB. Overall, quality materials with a handsome appearance.

The Tone
Full and round. Like I mentioned, the bronze strings keep it modest, but the tone is consistent across all strings. It's not the loudest acoustic bass, but you shouldn't expect them to be. It could keep up with one acoustic guitar, but as a practice instrument the volume is fine.

The Feel
It's definitely on the bulky side. It feels like a classical guitar equivalent to a generic acoustic guitar. Broad and flat fretboard with a big squared off body. It is 32" scale, which helps, but as a 5 string it's not your smallest contour. I don't mind because it has a similar feel to my Stingray Special 5, which is my go-to bass.

Features
I have not plugged it in yet, so I'll have to update later. You can see the 1/4" and XLR jacks, that's nice to have the option. The Fishman pre-amp has a built in tuner, which I appreciate VERY much. It's not the most accurate, but again, for practice it is very convenient. Surprise feature... strap button on the neck heel! Due to the lack of photos before buying, I had no idea that it would have a heel strap button, so that was a pleasant surprise. I emailed my rep at Sweetwater encouraging them to add that to their feature list because it matters to bassists.

Overall
Good value and positive playing experience. Great for 5 string practice on the couch during the baseball game!

I just bought one of these for my wife, as she's been wanting to add an acoustic bass to her arsenal for a while. It does play very nice, and has a good setup out of the box.

One thing I did notice though, is when it's plugged in ... the B, E and A strings are loud and pronounced, while the D and G strings are weak and barely audible. I don't think it's a frequency response issue, as when playing the same note on both the A and D strings (ie: fret 3 on the D string vs. fret 8 on the A string), the A string note is loud and clear while the D string note is inaudible.

So I grabbed my Seymour Duncan sound hole pickup I use on some of my acoustic guitars, and tried it on the Ibanez AEB105 .... and all strings play loud and clear when using it.

I think I probably need to pop the saddle out of the bridge and check the piezo fitment ... but wondered if you have noticed the same observation on yours?

hmm... I've never noticed because I've always used a 10 band EQ pedal with it when plugged in. I'm not a huge fan of the stock pick-ups/preamp... eventually I'll replace it with something else.

Glad you're enjoying yours. I practice on mine almost daily.

Thanks for the reply ... It sounds like yours doesn't have the same issue.

When I EQ the signal to try and balance the levels, I cannot get the D and G strings to sound loud enough to be balanced, without jacking up the EQ so much that it ruins the tone of the B, E and A strings.

It sounds to me like the piezo isn't making uniform contact with the saddle/body all the way across the element. When I have some time, I'll pop it out and check

Seems like you know more about it than I do. Good luck getting it worked out.

Sorry to resurrect this thread after lying dormant for over a year and a half but I was wondering if anyone here has looked for and/or found a set of tape wound strings for this bass? It seems no one is making medium scale 5 string sets in tape wounds.
- Since the La Bella 760N-B-M (and, assuming it was made at all, the 750N-B-M) were discontinued
(and short of
- jury-rigging it as I already suggested you, or
- custom-ordering* a medium-scale set of Pyramid 648/5 tapes),
- the only existing medium-scale BEADG black nylon tapewound option is getting a 4-string Warwick Tapewound Bronze medium-scale set and augmenting it with a single medium-scale low B from the same product line:

34200 M MS 4
available in the USA at the Warwick & Framus official Stateside outlet (select "Medium Scale" size)
Warwick Black Nylon Tapewound Acoustic / Electric - Bass String Sets, 4 String
plus
34130 MS
which I'm reasonably confident the same folks would procure for you if you email them.

* [For Pyramid Strings, an email in English to their boss, Max Junger, should suffice, provided you include ballend-to-nut and ballend-to-lowBtuningpost measurements. Alternatively, you can fill in their custom-shop ordering form.]

So, I checked out the USA Stateside outlet and their prices with shipping are reasonable (for the 4 string set). I checked out the Euro site and, while the price on the single string is fine, the shipping is almost $53!

I emailed the US site and asked if I were to purchase the 4 string set from them, could they get the B string as well? We'll see what they come back with.

I haven't looked at the Pyramid site yet...will do that next after I hear back from the guys at the US Warwick/Framus site.

If I can buy this set from the US site, I will probably buy at least two sets, maybe even three.

If everything goes as planned as I hope, please keep us posted: there have been one or two occasions where the Warwick tapes were the answers for a specialised need, but the fact the Warwick USA website only shows one product as available had me make the same gymnastics in my suggestions.

@HaphAsSard

OK, here's what I got from them:

"Thanks for reaching out, while we don’t typically stock these strings, I can definitely do a special order for you for the string, but it would take a few weeks for us to get it here from Germany. The total cost for the set plus the B would be about $60 shipped to you from Nashville. Let me know if you’d like to do it and we will go ahead and get an invoice sent over to you".

I wrote back and told them that I definitely wanted one set to start and if they work out, I'll buy more. I also told them there are several others on the Talk Bass forum that may be ordering some.
