I've just gotten my Warling bass back from the luthier with a couple amazing mods and I couldn't be happier.
A couple years ago I came across his shop in Portland where he had a number of guitars and basses including some of the earlier prototypes. Before even plugging in the bass I fell in love with the neck on one of his early builds. It had a set neck, wooden bridge, and two pickups (one p-bass style and one sidewinder ind the bridge position). The neck pickup sounded amazing and the fit and finish was ideal for me.
Fast forward a year or two and I was still digging the bass but had two issues. One was that where I anchored my thumb on the pickup was showing some wear on the oil finished body. The second was that the sidewinder pickup just never cut it compared to the rest of the bass and was just dead weight. I contacted Colin warling about adding a thumbrest and other pickup options. The end result was installing 2 SD Quarter pounders with a wengewood surround.
The end result is amazing. Now I've got some really nice tone options and a great anchor on the pickup ring. I think (knock wood) I'm done looking at other basses.
