NBD: Lakland 55-01

Those really are killer basses. Tried a good friend of mine's and fell in love. When I do get around to getting a 5-banger, it will most probably be a 55-01 (unless I see another Pedulla Thunderbass 19mm for $1000). True the pre is considered the only con to this bass, but the stock one still can sound pretty darn good:

A stock 55-01 was my main player for quite a few years before the coming of my Carlo.

Alot of folks mod these, but if you do I'd suggest swapping the pre first. It works fine but is definitley a weaker link than the pups.

Carl Pedigo says alot of folks swap things and come back to the original MK1 pups which are actually quite good. Apparently one of the most common arrengements folks end up with is the Lakland LH3 pre with the original pups.

Yup the pre is way bright and too hi-if for me. I had a fellow TBer put in an Agular pre and it sounds great with stock pups. Love my 55-01.

Great underrated basses and prime for upgrades. Still surprised Lakland doesn't make US versions of these. I just upgraded mine with Aguilar Super Doubles and an Aggie OBP-3 preamp. Can't wait to get it back from my tech.
