I literally just had the same shocking NBD (mine is a black 77VM). I have yet to post my NBD thread, but I'm immensely happy with what I initially bought as a "beater".

So much that it might be slowly getting me off a very long P bass obsession. It is great bone stock, but I did buy I few components to up its game a little. It's 9, I wanna see if I can make it a 10.
They sorta do; the James Johnston sig bass. The only reason I don't own one is the lack of a maple neck.

I've had both.
Squier has a much better bridge. The stock SX bridge is a "must replace", as are the strings.
some SX bodies are thinner than standard Fender dimensions, most are not.
SX neck tinting tends to be a vile shade of orange. But sometimes - total luck of the draw - you'll get a gorgeous piece of maple under that tint. That won't happen with a Squier.
SX has super thick lacquer on the necks, some people like that, I don't.
I got a rasp and filed down the neck on my Andromeda because I didn't like the profile. Once that was done, it was still a bit thick but had a tone like a bulldozer. And that one had better tuners than any Squier I've ever played. It didn't make the cut one year. I should not have gotten rid of it, big mistake.
They're close. REALLY close. If I had to pay list prices I'd be buying SX basses. But you can find Squiers used, in excellent condition, that are equivalent to any US-built Fender for the same price as a new SX.
I'm about to throw Kurt some more money for a 32" scale bass. Which Squier does not make, but should. It will be cheap, and good, just like everything else I've gotten from him.
ETA: woke up this AM and did the deed, 32" bass headed my way. Gotta see if I've got a decent bridge in the parts bin.

DR Sunbeams 45-105. They seem to suit Jazz basses really well. I also lightly sanded the back of the neck with #0000 steel wool and have Hipshot HB7's and American Vintage bridge on the way. I'm not normally the type to change out the bridge, but I'm a fan of the threaded saddle type and admittedly, the bridge on this bass is its weakest link. The most surprising for me was the pickups, which are fantastic. I do have a set of AV'64's I'm gonna try but to be honest, the stock pickups are really good and I may wind up selling the 64's.

Is that a VM or a CV? I wish they'd make a rosewood neck bound and blocked 70's jazz Squier Jazz, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Great bass for the $$, or just a great bass period. Dig the Ruby Slipper paintjob too! The ones I've seen at GC were atrociously set up, but waddya want for such short money? A few upgrades and you are into MIM or (arguably) MIA territory for half the price. I'd be hard pressed to shell out the extra $ for a full-blown Fender, but to each their own.
Here's my Squier.
I added the fretboard decals and bought a set of Lace Sensor Man O' War pickups and Madison's Ultimate Passive Jazz Bass Control Plate for it, but the new electronics have been sitting around collecting dust for a year because the bass sounds incredible as it is.
I did take a Scotch-Brite pad to the back of the neck, though...still looks good in the vintage-amber tint but feels much, much smoother.
I cant begin to tell you how annoying it is that my Squire VM 5 string precision sounds better then my American standard precision 5. However the neck on the American is much better, it never warps with low action and no fret buzz. But I can deal with a little buzzing and cranking the neck a few times a year 1/4 of the price.
