NBD - Low Budget "Backup" Turns into a Shocker!

I had a mic turn into a shocker once, but that was because the PA wasn't properly grounded! (And this was back when I was a kid and wore braces!) Bzzzzzzzzzt!

I know what it's like when your less expensive back up becomes your main player .

Happened to me and I sold the more expensive bass and bought another of the cheaper one as a backup. Put a lot of money back into my account .

Very cool looking bass. There is absolutely no doubt that a lot of Squier basses play, sound, and feel great.

So picked up this beauty to use as a practice bass/backup. It shocked the hell out of me. After a (much needed) setup, it plays as good as any US Fender I've owned (dozens). I didn't expect this and am quite blown-away.

The original owner put on the Hipshot tuners, detuner, roller string tee and Hipshot Type-A bridge. I really like the bridge as it's adjustable for spacing and I tightened up the string spacing just a hair. He also put on the strap locks. I bought new Fender Jazz knobs and replaced the stock chrome originals.

The pickups actually sound great to my ears at home. They very much remind me of Fender Custom Shop 60's. I'm gigging her this weekend and will report back.

I couldn't agree more. I picked up a Squier fretless used for $175 at Guitar Center, dropped about $50 more bucks on getting it set up properly, and I couldn't be happier with how it sounds.

Great feel, narrow neck (I have kind of little hands), easy and comfortable to play and delightfully light. Oh, and maximum mwah on demand.

It's not going to sound like a Pedulla, but I wasn't expecting it to. It sounds like a fretless Fender Jazz, and that's what I was after.

I have a 1973 jazz bass I bought in 1984 that was my main bass for many years. In about 2000 I decided to build my own Frankenstein copy of the '73 with Warmoth, Allparts, some Fender etc, parts. Several thousand gigs later...the copy is my main bass and the real '73 only gets pulled out occasionally in the studio!
