I posted a wanted ad in TB classifieds in 2016 for this bass (actually a KBX but close enough). As many know these basses are pretty rare, the KBX only made for 1 year with active soaps and the KB-1 made for maybe 3 years with Duncan designed PJ pups. So after 7 years, I finally landed one. (thanks Ben)
Bass is in excellent condition and as far as the serial number, I estimate 2001-2002. Jackson guys, correct me if I'm wrong. This version is 34" scale and has the brushed metal finish on the hardware which is in nice shape. The neck is basically Jazz width but very slim front to back, a lot like my MIJ Fenders. Paint is great shape, a couple chips but only on the back of the body and I'll be covering them with black fingernail polish. Rosewood board very nice, frets tons of life and no sharp edges. Has the dot inlays...at some point in the future I'll be looking for a "shark fin" neck but in no hurry.
I have her all cleaned up and as you can see in the pics I already moved the strap button to the back of the neck and it balances perfectly now. Bonus is that moving the strap button also moved the head stock a couple inches closer and playing comfort was improved dramatically for me. It was a long reach before that.
Playing impressions: Neck profile is very fast and comfy. I just put GHS Pressurewounds on which sound great but need to be broken in. The old garbage strings sounded pretty dang good also. These pups seem on the hot side I would say and there is a lot of flexibility in tone with the vol-blend-tone controls. Probably the best sounding P-J I've owned to date.
I'm playing an 80's themed country club gig next Friday so this is just perfect timing and i will be rocking it hard. So far loving this rare bass.
