OK, after a weekend with my new to me M5V...... this is indeed as I thought it would.... THE Mike Lull bass for me. I had two four string Lull's and they were great but I was never satisfied because I wanted a 5 and I was right. This bass is the modern active jazz 5 that I was looking for. Very Similar to my XOTIC but with a 35 inch scale that handles tuning down to Eb better than a 34 inch. Also, I love the classic Jazz tones that are the foundation of this bass. It doesnt sound like I am playing a preamp....if you know what I mean. The most impressive aspect of playing the M5V this weekend was how the bass really stood out in the mix with everything on the bass and my amp set flat. It rang clear and true form one end of the neck to the other and low notes were crystal clear. My singer/guitarist who really never talks about bass tone commented to me after the second set last night how much he loved the low notes on the Lull. They were clear and articulate and huge.
Congrats on the new bass. Its really hard to beat a Lull! BTW - for those of us constantly lusting over a Lull, how about a pic!
I only have the goofy pic in my avatar right now.... but I am expecting some good gig pics to be posted this afternoon.... I will put a few up for sure.
Why yes it does.... it slaps too... Dont have any pictures but I do have short video of an ill prepared solo with a distorted recording.... and the bass still sounds good.
Just had a listen to your video and loved the playing. Your new Lull 5 really cuts through beautifully. I've been a Lull fan since I played a passive V4 J at Bass Direct here in the UK. Also just realised it was you sitting cuddling your 5er in the Christmas basses thread. Glad you're happy with your new purchase.
Thanks man! I love the Lull. It just sits so upfront in the mix....I felt like my gig Saturday was a duet between my bass and my singer. I have wanted an M5V for sometime and it certainly is the bass for me. Along with my Roscoe SKB 5 and XOTIC 5 I am truly set for quality 5 string J's.
Finding a bass that cuts through the mix can be a hard task. I've rejected so many because I find I can't hear myself without turning everything up to biblical proportions! I'd still love that passive Lull, but I have other fish to fry first - Namely a D.Lakin Bob Glaub model P and I'm still hunting for that elusive perfect fretless too. It's not as though I haven't enough to be going on with, with my Status basses, an Enfield, a new Sabre and the little Rascal.
I am a huge Mark King fan. I so love the Status basses. Love to have one some day. For fretless .... I can honestly say it's Roscoe for me hands down. I am a Music Man fan too. Sabres are very high on my list of wants too.
Yes, I've been playing Status basses for 25 years. There's nothing quite like them - or like having Rob Green as your luthier I haven't considered Roscoe for fretless - I'll have a look into that one. Thanks. The Classic Sabre surprised me. I found an ex demo one at the Bass Gallery in London during the summer and it was so good, I let my Status S2 5-string and a brand new 2eq Stingray go for it! It produces a biblical wall of tone, the likes of which I've never encountered in a bass before, along with all the clarity at the top end you'd expect from an ash/maple MM bass. I'm still admiring your Lull, though. I'm going to Bass Direct tomorrow to play the D.Lakins and I'll be once again looking longingly at the Lull V4.
Aguilar or Bart preamp? I had the Aguilar in my M5V and it got buried in the mix. Totally useless onstage (even in passive mode). I was thinking of selling what was otherwise a great bass and then I switched the preamp (to a Sadowsky). Now it's perfect in a live setting.
Mine has the Bart Pre and it works great. I love that preamp. I also found the Aguilar pre not as easy to dial in at times in live settings.
Thanks guys. The bass really does play and sound fantastic. The B string is exactly what I have always looked for but never found in a 5 string vintage style J.
Sounds and looks like heaven! Congrats again on a great bass selection (including color and woods) as well as some fine playing! She's a keeper
I love candy apple red with a white pearloid pick guard, it looks classy... I know I have a P bass with that exact same combination... And the M5V sounds great also, good choice.
