NBD MIM Deluxe P question

so I just bought a used MIM Fender Precision bass at GC. I have a question about the electronics. It is a PJ with Volume Balance stacked bass & treble plus one more non functioning knob.

Can anyone tell me what that last knob is supposed to do?

I thought it might be a talent booster, and it just doesn't work for me.

Super nice. How much was it? If I can ask. Anyways where is the output jack... is the nob covering it. The serial number will tell you what model I think. I hope it wasn't an active jazz someone converted to a PJ.

I got it for $450. I plan on going back to negotiate for more of a discount. I played it at church tonight. Sounded really good. GC put a fresh set of strings and did a set up on it no charge. She is a beauty. First MIM PJ Fender I have played with a decent J pickup tone.

Output jack is on the side. I think the pickups and electronics are original.

Mine is the MlM passive version.
It came with a standard J pickup, whereas yours is a Fender Noiseless.
I'm not sure those came stock on your version, but probably did, since
They did come stock on the active MIM Jazz Bass several years ago like the one I have in the second pic below. No stacked knob on the Jazz.

I think you are correct. I plan on ordering a new pot to replace the mid control. It does nothing, and there is no center detente, the control just turns with no effect.

Any chance the shaft of that pot is sticky and the nut is loose? I had a Washburn bass like that, a while back. Turning the knob did nothing to the output--and then I discovered I was just rotating the entire pot in the control cavity. Fixed it with Deoxit.

Yeah, the manager at GC checked the bass out himself. He said it might be the preamp. The pot is phyiscally working properly, just doesn't have any effect on tone. I told him if my tech says it needs a preamp and not just the pot, I will want $150 back or just return the bass - I have 45 days to return it.

Apparantly the is some type of mid cut and boost with a fixed frequency. I am hoping replacing the pot will solve the issue. I am really digging the bass, which is surprising as I never liked any MIM PJ that I have tried before. I think the active preamp and the Noiseless J pickup set it apart - for me. the action still needs a little twerking, but I will be taking it to my techie dude soon. If I keep it, I will probably put a Hipshot Kickass bridge on it.
