for my birthday, i ordered myself a sans amp that i didn't really care for. AMS took it back and i said i wanted to exchange it for an ibanez mikro 5 string (technically it's the "Ibanez GSRM25 Gio Mikro Electric Bass Guitar Black"). i knew the mikro 5 basses weren't scheduled to be in stock till august 1, but i really wanted a short scale five, so it'd be worth the wait.
on monday i got an email that my bass was on the way. they were still out of stock, so i figured maybe it was a return, but i was fine with that. the bass arrived tuesday in the ibanez box with all the paperwork and the packet of stuff. the finish was perfect, the neck was nice but had very little relief, but a little turn of the truss rod and this is the nicest mikro i've played - no hint of buzz, rich tone, and what i hadn't noticed is it has 2 jazz style pickups rather than the PJ configuration that my other mikros have. not only does the low string not buzz, but it doesn't buzz when turned down a little more.
one thing that surprised me is that it weighs 8 pounds. i have two 4 string mikros, one of which weighs 5 1/2 pounds and the other a little over 6. it's not a boat anchor, but i was hoping for something a pound lighter. still, for most people this is pretty light weight for a 5 string.
overall i'm actually impressed. the bass plays better than i expected, finish is great, tone is very nice, and the strings are actually good for me. i like it SO much better than i had liked my now-sold warwick RB 5 string. all in all, a very happy slightly belated birthday present! i've already stayed up too late two nights in a row playing it
and i know the pic is dark and murky, but i know ya gotta have a pic or it didn't happen
i'll try and get some better shots and post 'em later.
