So I’ve got three gigs into my new New Standard Cleveland hybrid, and so far am VERY pleased with it! It’s got a nice, round, clear tone that sits well in the mix and actually allows me to play less loud than I’m used to and still be heard in the mix. Also, I don’t seem to need to use as much physical energy to pull a big sound of it; less so than my 1850’s Tyrolean. The bass amplifies well with Spiro Mittels and a Full Circle pickup into a Sarno Black Box and Tonedexter. The bass is a bit on the “stiff” side tone wise, but I expect it to “round out” some more as the strings and the bass “break in” (yes, I do believe that brand new basses break in!). I expected this to be my “second” bass, but I’m liking it so much it may become my “go to” gigging bass!

I just got my NS Cleveland laminate setup with spirocore lights, and my teacher played Beethoven’s 5th excerpts on it at my 1st lesson since I got it back. To my untrained ear it was pretty epic . They really know how to make those Cleveland’s right!

“Punchy” describes the sound of my new New Standard Cleveland, as opposed to the “warm, cushiony” sound of my mid-1800’s Tyrolean. Different flavors; both taste good!
