[NBD] Story time. In 2018 I had a very nice, lightweight MIK Lakland 44-01 that I got at a stupid good price. I was also in need of a career change, and I needed to sell something in order to get a test voucher for my first IT certification. Ended up selling the bass to pay for the cert, got the cert, and had a new career within a couple of months. I vowed to myself that I would get another Lakland after I had established myself and started to make more money.
Well here I am, 6 years later almost to the day, and I finally have a Lakland again. This time it is a 44-OS. This bass is awesome. It is still light weight (9lbs), it has the same pickups, but an upgraded pre-amp, and a new body style. I just got done playing this beauty for about 3 hours, and it is definitely the most comfortable bass I own (Sandberg Electra VS4, Fender American Jazz w/ series switch) . The body style is more comfortable than the standard 44-01, but it still feels and plays like a Lakland should. The look of it is incredible, the trans black with the wood grain showing through is gorgeous in person. In most light it actually looks like a deep green, and in the practice room it appeared to be a deep deep blue.
Still haven't quite dialed in the tone, but man is it versatile. What I have liked so far is the preamp bypassed with the push pull knob up, the pickups blend with a slight turn towards the neck pickup (about 3/4 of the way to detent), and the mid-range selector switch in the middle. The tone is growly, articulate and clear, kind of like a P/J with more top end. Still missing a bit of punch, but may be able to dial some of that in between my pedals and amp.
Still have yet to test it with the project I am going to use it for (Thrice like alt-rock in C# standard tuning ), but going to give these pickups a fair shake before I go on my next gear quest. If I still can't dial in a tone I want, I'm thinking of going single coil soapbars. I've liked what I have heard of the Nordstrand Big Blades.
