I tried two of those. One was light but had a bad dead spot. Other one didn't have any noticeable dead spots but was heavy as a tree. Neither worked for me; but Old Smoothie's with tamed aggression seemed to have a very usable sound. Congratulations, and enjoy!

If I remember the story correctly....Sterling Ball was a beta tester for Leo's new bass, the Stingray. Leo was notoriously hard of hearing and tended to tweak toward the high frequencies. Sterling told him the bass had too much zing. Leo didn't care that much what Sterling thought, hahaha.

But at some point, Leo built a one-off for Sterling, the original Old Smoothie. That pickup is a copy of the one Leo built for that bass.

And yes, I've played the original. The strings were about two billion years old, though, so it was kind of hard to evaluate, but what a piece of history.

Thanks! Haha yeah that's how I ended up buying one. Hadnt planned on it but kept looking through reverb and kept going back to this one, It's a great bass.

Great looking bass. I was in NYC back in 2017 when Matt Umanov's was shutting down, and they had an Old Smoothie. While I liked it, I decided to wait until I got back to Virginia and play my 1987 Stingray first. I'd put flats on the 'Ray which really tamed its bright sound, so I passed on the bass because I thought they sounded similar. But there were 5 days and 600 miles between the comparsison, so I could be wrong.

I had a chance a few years ago to buy a new Old Smoothie on sale, and I passed. I still regret that, although the new StingRay Special sort of scratches that itch.
