NBD Paul Reed Smith SE Kestrel

My new PRS SE Kestrel arrived today! I've been comparing it to my Fender Jazz, P Bass, and Ibanez
SR 500 regarding tone qualities, neck measurements, and playability. Pretty impressed! Ordered it from Sweetwater and the set up was dead on (for me). I checked tuning/intonation with a scope and it's perfect. Will be glad to discuss everything else about it.

I'm not an expert so this is just IMHO! Comparing it to all three of my other basses, the PRS really has a BROAD spectrum of tonal qualities. I was wondering if I could get both the deep boom of a P bass and the brighter jazzy/funk of a Jazz bass. This bass really can cover it all. It can go from a deep low end (muddy or clean) up to a clear and bright sound. The pickups (jazz) on it seem to have more output to them than my Japanes jazz. I measured both the width and thickness of the neck, as well with an electronic caliper. The neck is the same width as my P bass, but is closer in thickness to the jazz. For me, that's a happy medium. It has a 7.5 radius, as does my fender Aerodyne Jazz. Everyone has their preferences when it comes to Fender necks; I lean more to liking the Jazz neck.

The PRS has lightweight Hipshot tuners and a Hipshot Transtone (high mass) bridge. With an alder body and a through the body neck, this thing has a ton of sustain! I like the fact that the strings can be through the body, or from the back of the bridge. It came with roundwounds. I'll probably put chrome flats on it, like I do for all my other guitars.

The quality control on this is amazing. Not one sharp edge from any fret. The finish is flawless and I love the bird in flight fretboard inlays!

Clark Westfield, the more I play it tonight, more I like it! What kind of strings do you have on yours? You can probably give a lot more comment on the bass than I can! Really impressed with the QC on these PRS guitars! No hum noticed from the two single pu's, either.

I am using DR Pure Blues nickel strings 45-105.

Your correct, the quality is incredible!

Found my baby on Craigslist for $300, with all the paperwork/receipts and a gig bag.

Haven't played my American Special since I got it.

Enjoy!

If this is what comes out of Korea quality wise, I couldn't imagine what comes out of Maryland.

I have some friends who are endorsing for PRS and while they have the USA stuff they all say these basses are nice.

I bought a red PRS SE Kestrel off of Reverb (Dave's Guitar Shop) at around Thanksgiving of last year. It was in excellent shape and the price was right ("15% off black friday weekend"). Honestly, I probably bought it because I was in love with the shade of red and my band's guitarist has a PRS SE guitar, which is also an excellent value. The PRS has the most "accurate" pickups of my 3 basses, including a G&L Tribute L2000, and has instantly become my go-to bass for gigs and church. Good looking, easy to play, great tone; I love it!

Just to add a comment on the PRS SE Kestrel, I recently put DR Black Beauties on it and I'm in love with the tone these strings have on this bass. I've owned the Kestrel for just over a year now, and it is definitely my go-to bass for gigs or at church. It has a "clean" tone and the Black Beauties just seem to really "ring", particularly on the A and E strings. I've used these strings on my Tobias 5 string but I don't remember them being as clean sounding on that bass as on the Kestrel.

My Kestrel is made in Korea and dated 2018. My Kingfisher is made in Korea and dated 2019. I believe that 2021 will be the first year that the SE basses are made in the Indonesia plant and as of this date there is a 8 to 12 month wait for delivery.
