NBD: RICKENBACKER

Help needed. I was trying to use the mute. I was unable to turn the knob ok the control side so turned the other side a few turns and it came out. I was unable to get it to catch so I torqued a little more on the control side thinking I needed to loosen it in order to give the other side some slack. Well...that one came out as well. Now I can't get either rethreaded. Help! Looked for videos but apparently I'm the first ding dong to do this.

Those screws pass through nuts on the bottom of the mute plate, held captive by a little blob of glue. If you really torque the screws, you break that glue bond and the nuts come off. You have to remove the bridge and re-glue the nuts onto the ends of the screws. Its an ill-conceived system I wish they had dropped on the V2, but kept it for the undeniably cool vintage look. The mute can be made to work with a bit of fiddling and sometimes shaving the foam itself, but unless you leave it on all the time, hardly worth the trouble. Quicker to stuff a bit of foam under the strings in front of the bridge.

The one by the E gets in the way anyway. On the old bridges, the allen screw by the E is also a sharp hazard. Perhaps they thought it would encourage finger use.
