NBD: rock bottom fretless

After my 2nd vintage arrived broken I have now ordered one of these.

I got the €50 voucher by reviewing a load of stuff I bought so I also added a HB fretted 4 string jazz and still spent £50 less than I did on the vintage.

Hugh - disappointing on the Vintage. I wanted to get an idea how it stacked up against mine. I guess two broken is an answer. Please let us know how the HBs work out.

Mine had its first band test yesterday and delivered the goods. The apparent lack-of-shielding hum through my headphones at home wasn't at all apparent. I'm playing through a Zoom B3 to the PA (no physical amp) in a 500-seater auditorium using IEMs. I'd expect to hear imperfections pretty clearly but it sounded great. Sunday is the proper test, playing three services to around 900 people in total.

So far I'm really pleased with my purchase, and additionally with the D'Addario Chromes I put on - mainly for fretboard protection but I'm loving the feel and sound.

Yeah, it is disappointing, especially as I had to wait 2 months for the first one but it could work out for the best.

It looks like they've changed to a glossy finish on them now. I do like the look of the non glossy one but should still be nice.

It was a shame about the vintage's issues because apart from that they were very nice. The neck was comfortable and it sounded excellent (though these should sound as good as they appear to be the same electronics).

Mine arrived on Monday, but I was able to open it only on Thursday, so these are my first impressions :
I'm really astonished, for that low price I think it's really great bass. There are no serious flaws in fit and finish, the neck pocket is very tight. It arrived setup very well, the neck is straight and the stock D'Addario strings reasonably low, so far I didn't adjust anything. I could write more about it, but you can surely see more from the pictures I made : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/noluo41m3rr0c0a/7m7RLhiv5e#/ . And mine is heavy too, about 11.5lbs. As for a sound so far I love it, but I have to remind you that this is my first fretless and I have only been playing it for few days so time will tell if I'm not only overly excited.

Nice gallery! Looks identical to mine and glad to hear that I didn't get an isolated good one.

I'll be interested to hear whether you get much fingerboard wear from the strings, and I can definitely recommend Chromes if you decide to go down the flats route.

The photo next to the Fender was interesting. I had a feeling the HB was slightly less offset than a regular J and that shot seems to confirm it.

I have just sold mine. Too heavy, not enough mid-frequency content for my purposes (I guess that's because of the heavy ash), a noticeable dead spot on the neck, and pickup height could not be adjusted without applying force. BTW, the wood screws they use for pickups are really fragile, I managed to break one - and there already was another broken wood screw inside!

Well, that was a B stock item. Maybe you guys and gals are more lucky than me. But the weight cannot be fixed anyway - I need to be able to take two basses with me.

Heavy - check. Mid-shy - check. Fragile screws into hard wood - check. Dead spot (around 5th position on the G string?) - check.

The mids I can adjust my settings for, the weight I'm fine with, I've got the pickups to the right height (just about) and the dead spot - well, I just play around or through it depending on the context. Still happy with it for the money - it's not faultless I agree but it works for me.
