NBD - Schecter Omen Extreme-4

So I went to Guitar Center to buy a new 25' cable. I like their Livewire Elite series. Lifetime warranty and they are right down the street. The problem is when you go to the store you have to look at the bass guitars. You can't avoid it. And that's when I saw this rascal:

I picked it up and it played like butter. The neck is lightning fast. The headstock is gorgeous, 6 bolt neck, binding, gorgeous inlays on a rosewood fingerboard, and a flame maple top. I could not resist.

So my 5-string Ibanez had to hit the road. 9 basses is the house rule. It had 16.5 mm string spacing and I really like 18 mm. I just didn't play it anymore. I only kept it because it was so pretty. That's the problem when you live on your looks. There is always someone prettier that comes along. Meet my new crush.

This bass is going to get played at lot.

When I picked this bass up, the action and intonation were dead nut. The only time that has happened before for me was on my Schector Stilleto Studio-4. I was very impressed. It only weighs 8 lb-2oz, so super comfortable to play for long periods.

Congratulations! The lack of action on this thread is further proof that Schecter doesn’t get the love it deserves. I’ve owned a Raiden Special-4 since 2014 and I love that bass. Schecter basses sound and feel great and they are definitely slept on.

i never understood why Shecter seems so under-rated, the few times I've picked one up, they appear to be very well made, with a lot of boutique level features like the bound headstock, carved bodies, etc. Nice looking bass.

I have a Studio 4 and it is a great bass. I use it mostly to have fun with at home as double bass and 6 string are main players. But they are fantastic playing basses, well made and setup out of the factory. Dollar for dollar, a great deal. I like them much better than the Sires at a comparable price point. The preamps are a bit weak and I think that bothers a lot of people, but with the EMG’s for pups, they’re a simple upgrade. Or just use a box preamp to boost and mold the sound. But, yes, I love mine. It’s the trans black color, which means purple in reality.

I have that exact, same bass, Rod! Ordered it from Sweetwater back in May. It came set up pretty decent, but I still took it a guitar tech/luthier friend of mine who spent over an hour going over everything - slight adjustments, as needed, intonation, new strings, and you're right, it plays like butter. Not only that, but the woods, beautiful flamed, arched top, cream binding around the entire guitar - it really looks and feels like a much more expensive instrument. I only wish that it had a midrange EQ, but even with the classic 2 band EQ, you can still dial in some versatile sounds. Yeah, this is a keeper! Enjoy.

I've played a few examples of this bass. I was completely surprised by the price, as it played and sounded way above it's price point. I still may pick one up myself.

I’ve never played one of those, but I did almost take home a used Schecter guitar once. It was beautiful,beautifully adjusted, and the sounds gave my Gibson SG a real run for the money.

Same basic story, except that I was there to pick up a used amplifier that day, and I really wanted to avoid waking up in intensive care the next morning. (I’m married.)

Here you go, Rod. I meant to attach this to my prior post from earlier this morning. Resting comfortably in the Gator case, just waiting for Dad to get home! You don't find too many basses in this price range with an arched top, plus when combined with the striking polyurethane finish, it just has a really nice glow and shine about it. I play it through a Rumble 500, sounds great.....

well, to me it does!

I totally agree. It is hard to believe all the features on this bass at this price point. It just grabbed me. I am typically very thrifty and not prone to impulse buys, but once I played it and heard it; I had to have it.

Very nice collection there, Rod! I would say it fits very well on your wall. Looks like it's next to the Marcus Miller model.

Somewhere along the way they picked up a reputation as being a brand for metal players. You can see this a little bit in the schape of the headstock, and the name 'Omen'. There are other models like the Hellraiser and Riot that are even more obviously marketed toward this.

I will pause for a schort moment to allow us all to think of a "best bass for metal" joke and get it out of our systems.

Good? OK. So this association is probably what leads people to disregard other more classic designs from Schecter like the Model T, P-4 or J-4, all of which are pretty standard FSO basses. But I've picked up a few of them to play with, as one of my local schops is a Schecter dealer, and they're all pretty schweet instruments - really well made, no obviously boneheaded design decisions, good fit and finisch, etc. So yes, I absolutely agree that they're underrated, the next time I'm gassing for a new bass I will definitely keep them on my schort list.

Congratulations on the new bass OP. I also have that exact bass and I have owned it for about 10 years. It is very beautiful and comfortable to play, but it also sounds very different from any of my other basses. I've come to realize that while the EQ says bass and treble, it really is more of a low mid and high mid EQ which is why it sounds so different. It is not my favorite sound at home, but it sounds really good in a band mix. IMHO. Enjoy your new bass.
