I am glad you posted this.
I have noticed this with my Stilletto Studio also. I will be playing an Ibanez, unplug it, and plug in the Schecter, and it is much more quiet and have to turn up. I thought I was going nuts.

You may be onto something - I have a Stealth Stiletto 5 (P/MM) and at lower volumes, it can seem rather tame.

When I start getting the volume up more towards practice & gig volumes, the tone just opens up into a punchy, growly rock/funk machine.

Starting to think the Stiletto series is just made to be played at a decent volume.

Schecters get slept on, especially their classy looking basses! I've had 2 schecter basses, the Omen as a backup, and the Stargazer. The stargazer has been my favorite looking bass I've owned.
I have been in situations like your Stiletto with strings and not-so-great- stock pickups. I've even used a set of Black Beauties for a while! My resolution: Cleartone Strings, flat bass EQ, then shaping EQ with my amps as needed. Both sets of strings are coated, but the Black Beauties coating seemed laid on kind of thick. The cleartones always.. to me on that stargazer.. provided a clear tone (pun) I could use during performances.

I'm trying really hard not to be too critical of this bass. The feature set is fantastic (like neck-through with satinized neck - who does that now??) but I wasn't totally enraptured by my tone last night during practice - but the room sucks, and I did have earplugs in, and I'm still getting used to it.

Some time back I had a BC Rich Warlock NJ Series five string (double P) and just didn't like it - how it played was great, no other issues, but the tone just didn't sound good through my main rig. THEN I plugged it into my GK 700rb & SWR Henry 8x8 rig and WOW - there it was! Great tone, sounded awesome. I sold it because I needed the funds for something else (don't remember) and it was difficult to find a stand that would work with it.

So I suspect that once I replace the strings and fiddle around with it more I'll love it. In the back of my mind I'm thinking a set of EMG's might help but who knows, I think it's too early to say.
