Just got it cleaned up, I don’t know if it’s the DR Black Beauties that sound dull or the Music Man-like pickups but I’ll try it out like this before I just throw a brand new set of strings on it. Anyone else have one?

I’ve had dead Black Beauties arrive on basses before and they’re all kinds of awful, especially for those of us accustomed to something different. It probably just needs new strings. I bet that sounds burly when you get some strings you like on there

Thanks - it has a pretty beefy sound to it but it’s missing the clarity and crispness I prefer. It checks all the other boxes though: tilt headstock, 24 frets, 35” scale, top load bridge, active preamp that sounds clean. As a bonus, it’s a neck-through and the back of the neck has a satin finish! Perfect.
I know right? Just when you think you’ve seen them all, one comes along and proves you wrong. Like the new Jackson basses - they look pretty sweet too.

I have an obsession for wood. The musical kind.
I have a Stiletto Studio, and while the preamp and pickups can seem meh, just crank your gain/vol, slap on some nickel DR Lo-Riders, and you're set. My ideal strings are Elixir, but the DRs are certainly second (I can't find Elixir 35" B-strings right now).
I've got got the 4 string version. Great feature set for the 350ish I paid. Don't forget the graphite reinforcement rods! I usually use some type of DR string. I replaced the pickups in mine with Nordy Bigmans, and my preamp died so I threw an Audere in it. Sounds incredible. Even stock I found it to be pretty well defined, but the new electronics definitely improved things.
I added 2 switches so I can select north coil/parallel/south coil for each pickup. Easily one of the best playing basses I've owned.

I had one and sold it. Loved the neck and thought the electronics were pretty good.
It was my first five string and I got it for that purpose of learning a fiver but, the string spacing was too narrow for me to get comfortable with. Also, that headstock shape made me think ‘KISS tribute band’ every time I looked at it.
I had a stage 4 before and for what it is, which is very similar to an L2000 it’s a killer bass! I currently have a Stealth 5 and I think those Schecter 35 inch necks feel great!
I like the tone of those pickups better when I lower them further away from the strings....you could try it and it won't cost you any money. Cool Bass!! 
I put a set of roundwounds I had in my old string drawer and they did revive it somewhat. My basses all have Kalium balanced sets of strings on them so I just need to order a set for this one when I think I'm ready. I like to make sure I can get the action adjusted and see how it mixes with my other basses before investing too much into it. So far so good though, it seems to have similar output to my others (helpful for swapping during a set) and it has a pretty robust low end. Still getting to know it.
I looked up the specs - the graphite rods are nice, not used to a dual-action truss rod but it's fine so long as it doesn't shift like a Carvin I saw once. There was no saving that neck apart from major surgery!
I'm actually OK with the stock preamp - boosting highs and mids just past the detent gives it a little more clarity that stands out, and maxing the highs doesn't give me hiss - never had that before! I think it's fine - what I may replace are the pickups, but I need to play with the height adjustment.
I'm getting bad warbling and that's usually a sign they are too close to the strings, but I really like the strong output it has. I'll try backing them away and see if that lessens. I'd rather not change that much of it's guts out as for the most part they're fine - I have other projects I need to fund!
So I may just find the best compromise for now and live with it.Since I've always wanted a Cirrus this checks a lot of the boxes (although it doesn't sound like a Cirrus). Mainly the 35" scale; when I get my Wolf 7 preamp replaced (it's also 35" scale) they might take over band duty for now.
