NBD! (Sort of.)

I pulled the trigger the other day on a ridiculous deal from Chicago Music Exchange for a Sherwood Green Fender Mustang PJ bass. (After discount and rebate, I got it for $375.) It's my first bass, and I patiently waited all day for the Big Brown Truck to show up with it. Once it finally landed on my porch, I brought it inside and, just as I was ready to cut the the box open, I saw this:

I really appreciate that they put this on here, and I'd much rather be safe than sorry with the cold weather, but man, with tomorrow being Thanksgiving, I won't be able to open this until Friday. Bummer. It's probably for the best, though, because the amp I ordered won't be here until then anyway.

Still, there's a new bass in my house! Someday I'll actually know how it looks! :)

Been through this with acoustic guitars

As was mentioned it is primarily for nitrocellulose lacquer finish concerns

The wood expands and contracts at a different speed than the nitro, so there is danger of cracking....and the nitro finish can fog due to rapid temperature changes...doubt your bass is nitro finish

And thanks for the reminder about Chicago Music Exchange...great site, used to be part of my serial instrument search, need to put them back in the rotation

This comes up occasionally. I've said it before, and I'll say it again- I've taken basses that sat in a gig bag, in a freezing trailer, overnight, or for a couple days, into a venue, and pulled them out, with literally zero negative effects. I may have to tweak the truss rod a little once it gets acclimated, but it's been all good. I'm fairly certain stores want to be as cautious as possible, but 24 hours is a bit excessive, IMO. If that were absolutely necessary, I'd have to carry my basses inside the van, to keep them temperature regulated on the way to a gig.

This another reason I love picking up my packages as Will Call, because they've been inside at least a little while.
Expecting a new one next week from FedEx, which I'll pick up at Walgreens.

#1 reason is so the driver doesn't deliver to the wrong address, YES it has happened TOO many times!

#2 is because I get my delivery several hours prior to if I had waited for the driver to mis-deliver

Don’t open it early and post about it on line! If it’s messed up in any way, shape, or form, they’ll be watching. “Sorry, sir, I saw what time you opened the box...warranty void!!!”

but honestly, I keep a bass in my work truck 24/7/365. It gets down into the 20’s at night. I’ll take the bass out of the bag, let it warm up in the cab with the heat on for 10 minutes before I start playing. Nothing happens. I just have to tune it up and wipe the condensation off the body.

Yeah, 40 plus years, I've never had any kind of problems either with the cold/warm/warm/hot issue other than maybe having to tune a bit more right out of the case.

Well, after being overly-cautious and giving the box a full day to sit in my living room, I finally opened 'er up! I am beyond pleased with the fit and finish here, and while I don't know much about specific aspects of a bass to look over, everything here looks pretty great to me. (The lighting in our living room makes the Sherwood Green look a little blue, though I also thought it was a bit more blue-green than I expected overall. Still a drop-dead finish, though!) Here are some pics:

The finish on this thing is so glossy that you can see the picture from the TV reflected!

Love the oversized head stock!

I wasn't sure what to expect from the pau ferro--I'd played a pf Mustang briefly in Guitar Center last week, but I've heard lots of things good and bad about it on here. Now that I've got the bass, I love the way it feels, and I also really dig the wood grain, which is pretty pronounced. This one's also more of a rosewood color than some of the redder ones I've seen pictures of. I think it'll look even better after I get some lem oil on it.

My Rumble 100 doesn't arrive until next week, so I can't tell you much about how it sounds yet, though I did plug it into my Katana 50 guitar amp and play some scales with my headphones on. It sounded pretty sweet, even with that setup.

I'm excited to start down the bass path, and this feels like the perfect guitar to do it with!

Great looking bass! How are you finding it after (almost) a couple of months with it?
