NBD Squier CV 60’s Pawn Shop

was on a road run and stopped in a small town pawn shop today. They had this fairly well used CV 60s J hanging, spent a few minutes with it and it played really nice, and sounded good plugged in, even with not-dead-but-not-far-from strings. Owner indicated willingness to deal off the tagged price, paid $200 which isn’t the deal of the century but not bad. That’s about a buck fiddy USD.

Wanted a gig spare I could throw in the car and not worry about, this fits the bill nicely. Few dings but not much fret wear and nice straight neck. Cleaning and stringing it now.

Actually, that's a pretty good deal for one of Squier's top-of-the-line Jazzes. Used ones in decent condition go for about $250-ish here in the States. If it works just fine, then well done, sir!

There’s a rattle I can’t find (NOT the A string thing), that I kinda suspect might be the truss rod, though the tr still functions as it should, ie, changes relief, turns pretty easily. Is that possible?

Could it be buzzing or rattling tuners? I had that on a CV P-bass. Check out this thread:

Where, on J's and P's, the A doesn't have enough break angle over the nut and open A rattles a lot. Sometimes solved by making sure the A string is wound to the bottom of the tuner. Fender puts a 'stealth' A string retainer on some basses.

I see. I learned long ago to wrap down enough wraps to avoid that so it didn’t occur to me.

Nice score. I'm sure (with a little detective work) you'll get that rattle sussed. I'm a big fan of having a (good) cheap backup. I call mine my "trunk bass". I usually leave it in the car, even in the Florida Summer heat. 10 years on..... still in great shape. Maybe the best $100 I ever spent.
