Just had a package arrive, a Music Man Old Smoothie which will be joining it's brethren, an SR5, and a fretless Stingray Special. I never did a proper NBD for the fretless when I get that so it gets to share some of the spotlight.

I have to wait till the kids go to bed in a bit before I can plug it in but I did noodle around for a couple of minutes after I unpackaged it and it feels great already and seems to be very well set up.

I'll post back later on once I hear how it sounds.

I'll probably take some better pics this evening as well.

    Awesome, congrats.

Though I have to admit what I'm really loving is the fretless. Wowza!

Nobody does flame maple necks like EBMM! Same time you were getting your new bass, I was getting mine. I looked hard at that same fretless, but really needed a fretted 5.

Took a few more pictures today. My phone isn't the greatest so the pics aren't the best.

The Old Smoothie is playing great, though I will need to lower the action a little bit to suit my preferences. I also ordered some La Bella flats for the Old Smoothie which I think will be perfect.

That's an awesome bass too! I kind of wish my SR5 was like that, at least with the neck.

    Dang! Butter!

  9. Wow!
    Congrats, N4860.

I played an Old Smoothie a few times in the past few months, and love the tone.
It has roundwounds on it, but I can imagine flats would be a perfect match.

Much good luck with yours.

Very nice. I'll admit, I could never find my sound with the Old Smoothie. Great great bass, but just wasn't for me. I moved to short scale and sold it and many of my full scale instruments. I still have a EBMM SUB though that will be hard to sell.

  11. Nice collection of Stingrays, I have been thinking of putting flats on my Sterling Sub5 but keeping rounds on my EBMM SR5.

The smoothie has a different pickup. Pole pieces are between the strings rather then centered under each string.

I do still have all 3 of them, and have been thinking about getting a 4th sometime later this year. Thinking about getting a 4 string special HH in the aqua sparkle:

Nice bass! Congrats! What year is the MM?

....that fretless seems to be stealing the show! What a beautiful neck on that!

Yeah, that fretless is something special for sure. The SR5 is from 2009, the fretless is 2019, and the Old Smoothie is 2019 as well.

I've had 3 different SR4's in the past 3 years, that were just a bit to chunky or heavy for my aging carcass. Spotted this 2017 SR5 last week on REVERB, the dude claimed it was 8.8lbs.....it weighs in at 9lbs 2oz; good enough for me. Slapped some Boomer round cores on it (waiting for my B string to arrive) last night. This has got to be the most comfortable MM I've ever held, and easy on the shoulder with my 2.5 Levys leather strap. Absolutely love the ash and rosewood look too.

Why does it have Jazz Bass knobs on it?
