Not sure what kind of mix you're trying to cut through, but mine does a great job doing country and classic and modern rock with acoustic and electric guitars, drums and myself.

Hello @4ever4. I don’t have either of the TRBX basses anymore. I had two of the 505’s that both had strange preamp quirks so I returned them and went another direction. I kept the 305 for a little bit but ended up selling it too. GAS kept calling my name. It was a nice bass for the price though and I believe it should serve your daughter well. Here are some clips of it.

I’m just paranoid it might malfunction on her concert day in her school because of what I read on some other threads, especially the EQ switch electronics.

I had one not too long ago, one day the EQ switch would only work on some of the presets and cut out completely on one of them, then not too long after, it cut on two others. Spraying contact cleaner inside the switch helped somewhat for a little while, but ended up replacing the switch altogether. Not expensive nor hard to replace- worked great after that. Not sure what switch Yamaha uses, but it didn't seem as sturdy as it should be- I thought it was just the one on my particular bass but I guess others have run into the issue. Good thing again is that it's an easy fix, replacement switch only cost me something like $5 if I remember correctly.

Super comfy neck, lightweight, TONS of tonal options with that 5-way switch, and some pretty nice color options to choose from. For the money, it's hard to beat them, IMO.

I have my ESP LTD 4 string. I bought this TRBX305 for my daugther for her school band. We’re excited. Bought it from Sweetwater. Still in transit.

Sure. Let me start off by saying both basses had awesome playability, setups were great, both were lightweight and the overall sound worked. Now to the preamp issues.

Bass 1: When set flat I felt the bass sounded a little thin. I played it and just bumped the bass knob on the instrument and the amp up to compensate. It wasn't until I got to play another one a couple months later that I realized something was actually up with the bass knob. To get the same results on mine as the other one I played (when it was set 'flat') I had to pretty much turn my bass knob on full. I contacted Sweetwater to let them know and they sent me a call tag (I kept the shipping box) and they said send it back and they would send out a replacement. I said great and a new one was shipped.

Bass 2: Got the new bass in and everything worked great. I once again knew right away the last bass had a preamp issue. I plugged into my amp set things flat and the tone was nice and full. Thought it would be a keeper. But after I got to play it in a louder setting I noticed a subtle, strange hum coming from the speakers. Not a 60 cycle type but almost like a squelch type of sound that also modulated in frequency slightly. It wasn't super loud and I know I could play in a band and I doubt anyone could hear it, but it just really bothered me. The other preamp in bass 1 had the exact same top and mid delivery as this one but it was really quiet. The other one I tested in the store was the same way. I made a recording and sent it to my rep at Sweetwater. He heard it and said 'yeah, that's not right either'. They were about to send me a third one and that's when I decided to go another direction. I'm sure the 3rd bass would have been the charm but I just lost the desire after that.

I'm sure either of these basses could have been easily repaired but I want a new bass to be....well....new and working 100% correct. Hope this helps.

**edit** Please keep in mind this was regarding the TRBX505, not the 305 that this post was originally about. Everything was great with the 305.

Thanks for taking the time to describe the issues you encountered. I was curious because I haven't noticed any "quirkiness" with the preamp on my TRBX505 since I got it last April.
