Recently acquired this Lakland Skyline 55-AJ. Popped up on reverb for stupid dirt cheap, crazy price. Despise active electronics so converted it to passive. Sounds so much better actually. Definitely sounded good with the preamp, but having a simple layout with tone control makes all the difference. Low B is among the best in the business. Bliss achieved- a passive five string J style.

Lakland jazz and Spector fivers have the best low B to me, at least from all I heard so far. Congrats on the good catch !

That's great! Congrats! I've always liked the modern, no pick guard look of the AJs and nice modification. I too appreciate a simple control layout.

True! Honestly this thing is really even across the entire fretboard. The notes on the G speak with authority. Looking forward to using on my next few gigs/rehearsals.

Wow, congrats! I have a very early USA Lakland Glaub P that is the best pbass I've ever laid my mitts on.
RN my 34" scale fivers(Sadowsky and G&L) are ticking all the boxes but one of these days I gotta try a 35" and Lakland would be a no-brainer.

Of all the preamps I wouldn't rip out, it would have been the LH-3.... assuming that's what it had in it. Is it more about the simple layout vs the sound that makes active electronics so undesirable for your purposes? The LH-3 is one of the more musical preamps I've encountered, and dead silent in terms of noise. Nice bass regardless. You cannot beat the Lakland B string. Best in the biz.

Sadowsky modern 5 is just beyond everything else.

Never played one. They look absolutely awesome. Different animal though, compared to my Lakland- active electronics with humbuckers compared to passive electronics with single coils.
