Week 10 already? I guess it's November, so it must be. Into the stretch, and the Pac-12 appears to be the odd league out. Or maybe the Pac-12 and Big-12 if Notre Dame gets in. Washington plays Oregon at home, so that's got my attention. Any time Washington beats Oregon, it's good. Actually, any time Washington wins and Oregon loses, it's a good day. Washington won't hang 70 points on Oregon this year. Oregon is waking up. The Pac-12 thinks it's the Ivy League this year. Anybody can beat anybody else on the right day.

Yale is leading the Ivies. It's the Ivies, so that probably won't last. The usual routine for good Yale teams is to choke against bad Harvard teams. It must be preordained, and it appears to be setting itself up for that to happen this season. Yale plays Brown on high school football night. Really guys? C'mon, you can't tell me that ESPN has mandated a Friday night game in the Ivies. College football should be on Saturday afternoon. Now, excuse me while I should at some clouds that are misbehaving.

Dartmouth is in free fall mode with two straight losses. The Harvard one was tough as they jumped out early. Cornell comes to town, so hopefully the Big Green eliminate the mistakes this weekend.
Florida doesn't have a coach anymore, with rumors of Randy Shannon stepping in while they look for one.
I sure hope the Gators don't scrape up another up and coming coach.
There's a couple other biggies on the schedule too. Should be a fun weekend.

Just so you know @Gaolee, we have games Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week.

Time for the battle for the Little Brown Jug.

I hope Peters starts. He seemed to give the Wolverines a spark no other QB has this season. I know he's raw ( what, 40 minutes of actual game play total? ) but he seemed to respond well.

I'd like to see some ground game against a decent Gophers defense to give Peters a bit of comfort moving forward. Pass just enough to create space and let the backs pound it.

The Gophers are in much the same boat as Mich in the QB department. Will they stay with Croft? I'm not sure if it matters as the Mich defense seemingly only has to cover one WR ( Johnson ) to freeze their air threat.

We'll see I suppose.

Washington should have no problem with Oregon this week, Oregon's D seems better this year but the offense feels suspect, taking the run away will do it.

Will Arizona continue its winning ways? I dislike USC, so I hope so.

Hoping for an Oregon State win this week. The Beavers have been competitive since Gary Anderson left, this week might be the week.

And, in CAA action, I hope the Blue Hens are angry after losing to Towson, and handle Maine.

I have lost a lot of confidence in the NCAA. It's beginning to seem like one of those ideas that begins to stop abuses, but ends up over-legislating and micromanaging everything it touches. Just because something goes wrong somewhere doesn't mean we need a new rule every dang time it occurs. When a coach can't buy a broke athlete an airplane ticket home to see a dying parent, something is wrong. When the coach can't even buy the kid a sandwich before he gets on the plane, that's really, really wrong.

I don't know what the remedy is, but the NCAA is a reflection of our litigious society in which even the smallest error or mistake can't be attributed to fate or natural events. Someone must be at fault, so here must be a rule to prevent a recurrence. And now basketball is the "bad guy" because schools are directing kids to financial counselors who pay kickbacks. You can bet that there will be a whole slew of new rules and oversight because of this.

Back to our main theme....

The PAC-12 is indeed excellent at picking off each other. No one seems to get through unscathed. it's actually a pretty tight conference and everyone knows the Achilles' heel of its opponent.

I have no idea what will happen when Stanford visits Pullman this weekend. Will the stifling Coug defense show up? Will everyone run in circles and forget to block? Kind of hard to predict much. I can only hope for a W and a record of 8 and 2 coming out of this game. That's actually a really good record, the thing that makes you nuts is that the Cougs keep losing games they really should win. They also have an incredible talent for doing face-plants every time they get national TV coverage.

I hear ya, Mike. Now, an up-and-comer with a consistent record like Urban (leaving aside the other issues) is one thing. Signing a guy who's having one strong season or has just pulled off a couple upsets (such as the Iowa State or Syracuse coaches) is quite another.

The other possibilities:
Scott Frost, UCF. In college football, the pull of the alma mater is strong, so I'm guessing he goes to Nebraska. If not, I like what I've heard about him, but I'm still learning.

Dan Mullen: Hard to gauge, IMO. He had great numbers as the OC at UF, but obviously he had Tebow, Harvin, etc. On the other hand, what about his lack of success on offense at Miss. State outside of the Dak era? Is that understandable since recruiting to that school must be a lot tougher than at UF?

Chip Kelly: Well, he knows how to run a college offense, certainly. Very few ties to the state--that hurts, because the recruiting competition is so fierce now. Also, he had that NCAA issue near the end of his Oregon tenure.

Bob Stoops: I think he's done and not coming back. Also, the "Big Game Bob" nickname became a joke.

Charlie Strong: I love the guy, but I think he's got more to prove. USF's schedule has been quite weak thus far.

Willie Taggart: Didn't his tenure at Oregon almost end before the first game? I'm not sold.

Gary Patterson: I like him a lot, but I don't see him leaving.

Mike Norvell, Memphis: No clue.

Even though they're undefeated, I still don't believe in Miami. They'll have a chance to prove me wrong against ND in a couple of weeks, assuming they get past VT. They have both of those games at home. I'm not too sure about Wisconsin, either.

In honor of the epic TD run against New England from Melvin Gordon last week, I am climbing aboard the Wisconsin bandwagon.
I'd love to see another new team in the playoffs.

Nick Saban will again think he is better than all three of those teams, and will thus lose.

Enough of Clemson and Alabama already. Enough of Ohio State, even though I grew up as an Ohio State fan and ancient tribal loyalties never quite go away.

I can get behind that, sort of. Not a huge fan of Miami and would be just fine watching them get close, and then whine about being left out.
Ohio State? Yeah, enough of those jokers already. Urban Meyer....he makes me mad still.
Alabama I like to see in there just because they are so dang good all the time, and I like the consistency.

Even my buddy who's a big Canes fan isn't sold--he thinks UM has just been scraping by bad teams. They have to play Virginia Tech on Saturday, and ND the following week, so we'll see.

Wisconsin is an undefeated team with a lot to prove as well. Unless Michigan wins its way back into the rankings, the Badgers won't face a ranked team until the Big Ten title game. I'll be rooting for them.
