NCD: Ampeg PN-115HLF NEO Cabs x 2

I've been looking for a deal and found this pair used. Actually one was used once and the other was new still in plastic. I grabbed these locally from a former Ampeg employee.

I'll give a more thorough review after a gig in 2 weeks but here's a quick synopsis. I was looking for something lighter and more manageable than the Berg NV610 that these are replacing (Yes, opposite of the Berg in tone) but these sound great...very punchy, deep but with very even lows and highs, and they move some serious air (I demo'd them with an SVT7-PRO). I can't possibly imagine these not being enough for any gigging bassist who dig 15's. These cabs are loaded with an Eminence 15 and tweeter which has no harshness at all. I'm not a tweeter guy but I did find the tweeter sounded smooth straight up. Ampeg did a nice job on these cabs.

I recently had abdominal surgery and the reason the NV610 was sold was I just couldn't manage the size and weight. Cab weight per the specs is 59lbs. These cabs are average sized but for me were a little bulky but manageable, weight was OK and I was able to manage getting BOTH cabs into the backseat of my Hyundai Sonata with a few inches to spare.

But I crapped myself getting the SVTIIPRO on top. :hiding:

It's close enough for me. A few years ago, I was getting ready to head out to a gig. Went to pick up my SVT-II and threw my back out. Made for a very uncomfortable gig. I do love the sound of it but I just don't want to have to move it.

Fred, I'm lucky that I've never had a day of back pain, which is unusual considering all the jobs I've had where heavy lifting was a daily occurrence. It's true when they tell you, "Lift with the legs." That said, I'm probably taking my Micro VR to my gig tomorrow ;)

It was already a couple of feet off the ground as it was on top of my Genz NeoX 212 cab. I just lifted wrong. Luckily, it was just a muscle strain and I was ok in about a week or so. Still, since my practice room is in the basement and I have to bring everything up the stairs, through the living room, out through the breezeway into the garage, I'd rather carry the 7 Pro. :)

SVT 2 > SVT 7 IMHE the lower the number the truer the sound.

I usually bring a buddy with me to the lockout to grab gear, and then he loads my gear in and out. More than happy to fork over 2 beer tickets for that service!

That being said, I am about to jump the shark.

Recently downsizing, I wound up with two pn-210hlfs. After removing the horns completely, I found that the cab really sprang alive with the new port (hole where the horn was). Much more of that woody growl that I am looking for in an Ampeg cab.

I am curious what effect would be had by removing the horns completely from the PN 15 cab(s)
