NCD: Avatar 212

Over the past few weeks, I've been sort of jonesing for something new in the amplification field. I thought my trusty TE had an issue, when really, it was an issue with the user (me). Then I thought I wanted to get a 112 to pair with my Avatar 210, mainly for aesthetic reasons as my garage sale, mix n match, 3 components, 3 brands stack is functional, but I am tired of how it looks.

Add in the fact that I have some discretionary income from playing shows and, well, you see, the GAS is pretty fierce.

It all came to a head yesterday when lo and behold, in a local Facebook music gear swap page, a fine gentleman listed an Avatar 212 priced so aggressively, I thought that 1) it was a typo and/or 2) it was broken and 3) it was already spoken for.

Well, despite a few comments, no one committed to it, but I told him I would be willing to check it out today, Labor Day (US). He agreed and this afternoon, I headed over to check it out.

He was unaware if it was a 4 or 8 ohm cabinet. I currently run 2 8 ohm cabs and when I got there, the 212 was a 4 ohm cabinet. No worries, as my TE wants to run at 4 ohm minimum, which should give it the 200 watts that the head is rated at.

I plugged in my L1K, no pedals, and with graphic EQ on by default and it sounded great. I didn't have my 210 with me to compare, but it sounded fuller, thicker, deeper and more well rounded. The 210 is very midsy to my ears.

I also lucked out and got to play his shell pink Fullerton (US) G&L Fallout. He had flats on it and it sounded really awesome through the TE > 212. Just the right amount of thud and thump. Quite cool and a happy coincidence that he was also a G&L guy (he also has a Fullerton LB-100 at home).

Added bonus is the cabinet came on casters and is quite light, despite its size. I have put it through its paces at home (no band) and it is quite loud and should fit in just fine. My plan is to use the 212 as my gig rig and to leave the 210/115 combo stack at my band's rehearsal space.

Quick question about the casters: they are not removable. Does it matter? Meaning with coupling/not coupling issues? Will there be issues? I suppose I could always lay it on its side...

I will be playing it tomorrow at a rare Tuesday night show, supporting my pal Kathy Moore in her rock trio. If you're in the Ballard area on 9/6, come on by the Tractor and hear it in action.

Here it is under my 210. Love that they match and are stackable, sad that I can't play them together without blowing up my amp.

Ok amp nerds, now that I've had the chance to play it at a show, I'm thrilled with how the cab sounds. At 4 ohms and with my amp pushing 4 ohms at 200 watts, that means this cabinet's getting all 200 watts? Is it 100 watt per speaker then?

I'm guessing the cabinet itself is rated at 500 w for 4 ohms, so if I get a 500 w amp running at 4 ohms, what will I notice? More power? What does that even mean? It runs louder? Is that all I get? It's all new territory to me.

I felt like running the 212 at 4 ohms and 200 w from the amp sounded thicker, fuller and rounder. Normally I have the 210 and a 15 running at 4 ohms, both cabs are 8 ohms. So I'm splitting less wattage across more speakers, right?

Bottom line is it sounds better to my ears. Since I have a video from last night, I will have to compare it to videos with the other setup and see what the sound difference is.

Never guess at the limits of the speaker cab nor the amp. Always know. No guessing.

The difference between hearing 200 wts vs 500 wts? Barely noticeable. Don't fall for the hype. More power? Yes. More volume? Barely. It would take 10x the power to double the sound, so a 2000 wt rig would be noticeably louder - until it suddenly goes quiet. Don't guess.

Congrats on the Avatar 212 cab!

I've been gigging two, Avatar B210 Neo cabs in a working, 5 pcs., country/rock group stacked as a vertical 410 for 15+ years.
They've been nothing short of great!

(FYI: The two Avatar 210 cabinets replaced a Amp*g 810E and a 410HLF, and a Ed*n 210XLT and a 212XLT cabs.
Haven't missed the Amp*g's or the Ed*n's.)

I'd like to hear more of what you think when you A/B the 210 to the 212 as stand alone cabinets in a live band setting.

When I first switched to bass part time (from lead guitar) I ran a PV 800 Max into pair of Avatar 212s. I never needed FOH support except for dispersion. I could wake people in the next county. And the tone was gorgeous. Been chasing it ever since.

Here's how it sounded by the way, with my phone on the stage about 15 ft in front of it. Only a few songs as my phone was full. If you fast forward to about the 10 minute mark, you'll get a really good indication of how the cab sounds as the song is pretty sparse and I'm filling in the bottom under Kathy's solos. We did a cover of Cortez the Killer.

That is a great cab. I ran the same but an 8ohm with the kappa pro drivers (I think?) for 7 or 8 years under a bridged QSC RMX1450 and tech 21 rbi. Wow that thing sounded amazing. The rig was the best, but it was SO heavy. I had to go class d and neo but that B212 was unmatched in performance for anything that I have ever used, I do miss it.

I just called Dave at Avatar. He said depending on the speakers in the cab, it's either 500w or 1000w. Either way, I'm good. I can't imagine ever needing more than 500w.

Great Cab, i have one that ive used for over a decade. 212 4 ohm, NOT the NEO speakers so it weighs in at like 68 lbs.
Parting with it now as ive moved to a modular 112 setup, for sale in the Philly area, but ive enjoyed it over the years and for the price can't be beat.
