Received my EA VL-208 cab yesterday, quickly checked it out to make sure it was working, and went straight to my gig. An old school soul/R&B band playing at a small bar. That's just what I bought the VL-208 for.
Ran a five-string electric bass through a Quilter Bass Block 800, no effects, no compressor, no nothing, no FOH support. The Quilter was set at 400 watts, with the gain at about 11 o'clock. The bar was packed and we hit the ground running with Superstition in Eb, which meant I was pounding the B-string from the get go.
What ensued was three hours of sonic bliss. I may be too quick to use superlatives, but this thing was off the charts. In 50 years of playing bass I have never heard a speaker come so close to studio monitor sound quality in a live setting. Granted, we weren’t playing terribly loud, but this cab had astoundingly even and smooth response across the entire spectrum. It didn’t flinch in the 30-150 Hz range and just asked for more. This is from two eights, two fives and a compression tweeter!
I own a Greenboy Fearless 210 and just sold an F212 that was a wonderful cab but wasn’t being used enough, because I rarely need that much firepower. Now I’m thinking of getting another VL-208 and running one each on the two stereo channels of my Walter Woods for the occasional outdoor or large-room gig.
