NCD! Genzler Nu Classic NC-210

I picked up a very gently used Genzler NC-210 from a member in the classifieds and FedEx dropped it off this afternoon.

A bit of background - I've been playing a Genzler MG-800 into a Genzler NC-112 for a while now and have generally loved the range and quality of sounds I'm able to pull out of the single 12. There is a 'heft' to the tone that's difficult to describe. It's plenty loud, at band practice in a 90s-00s alt rock cover band I can keep the master under noon.

My only complaint on the 112 is that (of course) more has to be better, right? Honestly, it's just a little short height-wise on an amp stand. The tone is amazing and full, and has more low end than I need. I also wanted a second lightweight cab for when stage volume allows.

In my head I tend to 'think' I prefer 10s and two is always better than one, although I know it's more about the whole package of box plus speakers and and cabinet tuning. I originally picked up the Nu Classic 112 to try something different as I also have Avatar 210 and 410 cabs with neos.

I sent Jeff Genzler an email sometime back and he recommended either of the 210 or 112 cabs as a second, with a slight preference to the 210 due to my mentioning that I often tame the lows a bit. I know some prefer to not mix drivers, but Jeff assured me there would be no issue with these cabs. I was really on the fence as to which to order.

Just before Christmas I noticed a classifieds post for one of the 112s. After a few chats, it turns out the seller also had a 210 and said he would sell that one instead at a very reasonable price if I was interested. I figured this was a good opportunity to finally be able to compare the two myself.

Anyhow, I was able to spend some time comparing the two today.

The single 12 sounds clear and with plenty of lows. Its not like the cab emphasizes the bass, only that you have enough to fill the notes. I can hear the whole note cleanly without any particular frequency being exaggerated. The sound is surprisingly large for the size of the cabinet. It is so much smaller physically than the sound would suggest.

The 210 in comparison has a little less very low lows, like maybe going from 2 to noon on the MG-800's Low EQ knob. Maybe a little more mids, but I think it's more about having slightly less very low lows. I've heard someone say the 210 has more 'immediacy' to the notes, and this is true, but it's a really, really small difference and one of those things that you simply wouldn't notice unless playing them one at a time side by side. I do think the 112 by itself sounds the slightest bit 'chewier', if that makes any sense. Honestly, these sound so much more alike than not, whereas my 210 and 410 Avatars sound very, very different from each other.

I love the extra height of the 210 cabinet, even if it's just a couple inches. It does appear tall however, whereas the 112 appears more proportional. Visually I prefer the 112, not that that really matters.

Played together, each cabinet sound like a perfect extension of the other. Neither is competing for attention. They sound as if they are a single large cabinet and the sound comes from the whole box, not just where the speakers are.

I am convinced I would be happy with a stack in either configuration. Having one of each just means I have more options if only taking a single cab. Not that I have any real need for it, but I would not mind picking up one of the 212s in the future just to complete the series.

I'm not someone important that anybody should listen to, but Genzler has developed a really fantastic series of cabinets and amplifiers. I'm extremely happy with mine.

No, but I like it!

Incorrect, sir! You are exactly who we and the mfrs should be listening to!
Thanks for this post.

Gritty low mids is the rock bass sound... IMO.

I don't have a Genzler cabinet (I have a Genz-Benz STL-8T which I use constantly and treasure) -- too much gear here! -- but if I were to make another purchase, these Nu Classic cabs would be at the top of my list.

I know lots of people are really gaga over the BA cabs, and they are really nice, but I have an MG350/112T-V combo/cab and I love it. I had a BA10 but I like that this is just a little taller so it's easier to make amp adjustments. It's also just a little more full and a little louder but still easy to carry in and out. Handles a B string just fine as well. If I needed more volume I'd probably get another. The NU Classic cabs are also very nice. Love the "old school" look - like my MG cab.

Interesting that another builder has recently come out with a "vintage" line of cabs as well.

I think by 'chewier' I mean the 112 is just the _slightest bit_ grittier in the low mids when the speaker is pushed. Not enough to notice unless you're really listening for it.

Not really sure why I reached for that word in particular, it was just what came to mind at the time.
“Chewier” - Neat description!

The NuClAssic 112 is a much bigger sounding cab than its size would suggest. Agree with your thoughts on the 210/112 and I could definitely be happy with either the 2-112 setup or the 210/112 setup.

The 112 cab by could cover many situations alone and would be perfect for a grab and go reversal or small gig.

Not sure if this will add anything to the conversation since I am an electric bass jazzer and rarely have to compete with a loud drummer. But I have played and compared most of the top 112’s, looking for clear, deep resonant tone from my Sadowsky NYC Will Lee and Sandberg Superlight. Most recent smackdown was the Genzler NuClassic 112 vs the Bergantino HDN 112 both played thru a Demeter 400B and then a Tonehammer 700. Full disclosure: Tweeters are always dialed to zero.

Despite the differences in the amps, with the Berg imparting a warm hi-fi sound and the Aggie being it’s ineffable self, both cabs
delivered. Nice and deep, good projection, not boxy or muddy at all. The Berg, however, was a bit richer and more resonant. The differential seemed to reflect the new price of each cab: 650 vs 800.

FWIW (and it’s a lot to me) as good as they are, neither of these cabs holds a candle to my Barefaced Super Compact. The pillow of sound that blooms out of that baby punches way above it’s weight (pun intended) and above it’s configuration. I have to limit the number of whole notes I play on ballads, they’re just too erotic.

I got to play this exact setup yesterday. Magellan 800 through the Nu Classic 112 and 210. As a stack they sound phenomenal. Like the OP, I could be happy with either the 210 or the 112. I decided to go the modular 2x 112 cabs route and put a deposit on the first cab. I will put it through its paces and buy a second one if the first one works out for me. So much great gear on the market but @Jeff Genzler makes my absolute favorite at the moment.

Can we get an update now that you’ve had more time to compare the 112 and the 210, and also the overall stack?

I need to buckle down and decide on which model to pair with my NC-112.

I'm still really happy with the 210+112 combo. I generally bring the 210 to practice as it's a bit easier to hear by itself without needing a stand.

The 112 is easier for one handed carry with the handle being at the top / back. The 210 isn't heavy but the handles on the side make single hand carry a little awkward.

I switch back and forth at home and still can't really say that I strongly prefer one over the other. The tone of the 112 is warmer and has a bit more low end, while the 210 is perhaps more neutral, but brighter. I prefer the tweeter turned up to about to 2-3 o'clock on the 112 and closer to 9-10 o'clock on the 210. I do keep the 112 on the floor so this might be a factor here.

I still think they sound amazing when played together. If I had to pick again and they had to match, I'm not sure if I could really decide between two of the 112s or two of the 210s. I might go with the 112s just because they are so easy to carry, but it wouldn't really be a decision based on tone.

Overall, the combination of the two is really something special. Perhaps a matching pair of either could be even better, but I don't really have the opportunity to try this with buying another and I never feel like I'm missing anything by having one of each.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I ended up putting a deposit on the NC-115 simply because it was a little more compact than the 210. I considered getting another 112 (and saving $200 lol) but I figured the 115 or 210 would serve as a better stand alone cab than a single 12.

In other Genzler news, my guitarist gave me a 20% off Musicians Friend coupon and I decided to see if the discount would work on Genzler gear…………. Looks like I have a Magellan 350 headed my way for 20% off!

Can I ask you which cabinet is louder? I'm thinking of buying one of them and a Magellan 350, just as a 1 cabinet rig. If anyone else has an input on that too, please

@perkingbass --- thank you for your interest in our Nu Classic cabs. I can confirm a few things about the 2 cabs in question. They are both 8 ohm cabs. the 210T will be louder and have a bigger tonal footprint, but it is a bigger cab than the 112T. As mentioned, the NC-112T may have a deeper feel to it but the NC-210T will move more air and have a nice vocal footprint.
If you're looking for a smaller cab, then thr NC-112T would be a mice fit.
Also, the latest models we have in stock now have the bolts on the top so you can mount the MG350 to have a combo setup, if that is of interest to you.
You can PM me if you have more specific questions.
