My affection for '80s Peavey gear runs deep, and it may have just come to my rescue.

Late last November, the perfect band mate appeared from nowhere in my Instagram messages. We had a "where have you been all my life?!" moment just minutes into our first meeting and we got cranking on what we've both always wanted to do right away. Sure enough, he informed me early this summer that his spouse's job would move them hundreds of miles away for a year  within days of this unwelcome revelation, the other doom-thrash duo in our somewhat isolated scene released three killer songs and we got to hear them with bass for the first time (I would later learn the guitarist had started out on bass, and clearly still takes it seriously). I approached them about filling in on bass while my band mate was away so they could sound that good live, and I started rehearsing with them shortly after my friend's big move. Part of my pitch was that I had a good rig, but to my horror, I found 300 watts into a 2x12 and 1x15 struggled to keep up  yes, they could let up a bit; they definitely play too loud. Were it my band, I would ask them to let up a bit; but it's not, so I found myself in a volume war I never wanted … but with an excuse to snag the cab I've wanted for the past few years

Growing up, even those in my circles who looked down their noses at Peavey had to admit that Black Widow speakers usually sounded great, and my favorite cab ever definitely sounded great full range with nothing but a single 18" BW in it (until it got stolen ). The Scorpion speakers never seemed to get the same respect, but I found myself pleasantly surprised by the sound of the huge, rat-fur-clad 115BX I had before my hasty move to Bigfoot Country forced me to part with some of my bigger gear. (I have since learned that no less than our esteemed @agedhorse likes Scorpions for bass guitar and has a healthy respect for Peavey amplification of that period generally.) A 215D, with similar dimensions to my favorite cab of old and the Scorpions I have come to properly appreciate, seemed like a good thing to snag if the opportunity ever presented itself. It finally did, and I pounced.

This and the 212 had better be enough! :bassist: I will find out when I play my first club show in a drinking age this Thursday! :woot:

When my band mate moves back, hopefully the 215D on its own will suffice

Guys keep it loud if you like but please please wear ear protection. Don't be like a lot of us now wishing we had back in the day.
My over-preparation for the show included two different kinds of hearing protection :D I can't speak for the other guys, but attending one show without it as a teenager (Quiet Riot, ironically) and not hearing normally for a few days was all the convincing I needed. It also sounds like this rig has finally convinced them to back off  but I don't regret snagging this cab; it sounds good at somewhat lower volume, too!

Some guitarist do respond to ultimatums. Turn down or else!

1800W with the head in the image Epifani UL902C. I could also hit them with 2500W from an Ampeg SVT 8-Pro.

Then again, a lot of guitarist get all bent out of shape  and want to throw hands if you challenge their (perceived) dominance.

IMHO :spit:

That setup is RIDICULOUS and I love it!

Fortunately these guys like hefty low end. The guitarist, who started out as a bassist, laid down some mighty lines on their recordings. That's no small part of why I've joined up for their live shows.

Back in the 80s, I loved my 1810 and Mark 4 head. Thinking back, it was a little heavy.. .
I'm nearly 43 and loaded trailers for a major courier company as a younger man, so while I do feel my age, I've lifted worse. Never tried a 3620, though :roflmao: as gear I've had goes, my Mesa Buster! 1x15 tube combo and PV-4C power amp feel heavy. The components of this rig seem manageable by comparison, more cumbersome than heavy if that makes any sense.
